For years we've pondered engines to use in the 126.
That illusive more power and reliablility engine to suit the 126 which isn't easy as the 4 cyl engines I have seen would require cutting and welding and tests and >:( pain. And handling must take a turn for the worse with the weight of and extra sheep on the back of the car!
You've then got bike engine which are as above...pain, and not much torque to torque about.
Then Steve suggested the RX7/8 engine however there is pain as far as I can see there in poor fuel consumption and the rotors wear. God knows if you'd get a good engine and they seem like black magic to me all that whirly stuff. Not a bad idea at all though and could you imagine, a 126 would go like..
One bike engine looked like a possibility, the BMW twin however the flywheel seems to be recessed into the engine, take a look you will see, it's just not going to work for me with limited funds etc etc.
So you left with tuning the original engine. You could go Steve's route of the turbo. Ok so rocket scientist meets 126 with engineering abilities and resources.
You could go the comercial route buying performance parts...prepare to re-morgage the house. I saw a souped-up engine for £10000 once they say gives something like 80hp.
And the problem with this route is reliability takes a fall. Pictures of broken cranks can be seen often.
But what about...not 2 cyl...not 4 cyl... but maybe 3cyl?
Thing is time passes and newer cares with new engines are now ending up in breakers and flea bay, and for the price of my electronic ignition one could pick-up a 1.0litre 3 cylinder Toyota Aygo engine with what looks like a proper flywheel etc etc.
Surely the pick-ups will go with the engine and coil packs. I'd go old school and bung a carb on the thing and forge some exhaust and inlet manifold stuff on my anvil with the help of some hot coals and hammer.
But I wonder what the opinion is if if it could work? ;)

I'm running a Mazda RX-8 as a daily driver, it's the lower output 192 version but goes like the proverbial,reliability is always on my mind tho, as is the 16 mpg, (can't wait to get into this Fiat, lol). The main problem is these engines need a lot of care and maintenance and with that they can do 200k easy, only thing is most were bought my non technical people that just wanted a flashy sports car to cruise about in. So a lot are dead and need rebuilt by 60k, a £2k to £3k option, oh and the torque is non existent from low revs so stalls easy at junctions, if that happens to be right after you start it and move off there's the risk of flooding, then it won't start without a hell of a lot of hassle. But it's ok when warmed up, unless the rotor tips need replaced then it won't start without a hell of a lot of hassle. Other than that, a fun car. Anyone wanna buy mine? ;D

as you can see I had to remove a piece of the engine mount or ended up with a rather peculiar hole in the bonnet

In this photo you can see the axle which would fit in the gearbox and would hold the Toyota clutch. I wanted to use the japanese clutch because the flywheel doesn't fit the fiat bellhousing..... In the end it turned out that the axle was distorted because of the heat due to the welding process... That's why I went for the toyota gearbox...

No wait my real initial plan was to use a VFR engine.... Did some math (or tried to..) and couldn't work out the gearing....

So the big question remains: could it work?? Give me some more time and we'll see (I hope it does!!! :$ :D)

I thought of a big twin bike engine. It would need an adapter to be able to bolt the fiat flywheel to the bike crank. Then an adapter plate to bolt to the gearbox. You'd have to put a seal on the flywheel. You could bin the bike gearbox internals. What you think?

It can be working, but you need to calculate everything and messure a lot,,

When i was a lad, the 2nd car i owned was an Auto Union, DKW 3-6 coupe I loved that car with its 3 cylinder two stroke engine that was so smooth and revved so sweetly to 7000 rpm it was a joy to drive with its Triple Carbs and Coils, this engine was also used in the Wartburg and Saab who won the world rally championship with there Saab 96, the engine was very compact although i don't know how it would fair in this day and age :$

The DKW's had 40bhp and were heavier than a 126. Could be a worthwhile experiment.

I used to love the noise of the 2 strokes which always sounded like they were running double the revs of a 4 stroke. And all of that smoke, brings back some good memories :thumbup

Exempt from emissions test as well, this idea gets betterer and betterer.

What are your guys thoughts on a diesel. Like a Piaggio 1.2l or 1.4l? Not much power there, but, something similar in the diesel family....

I think that too much bhp will be difficult to get down in a 126, diesels have more torque,should be more controllable power. Problem is they are bigger and heavier engines.

You'd have to comply to the book on what a 126's emissions should be on your MOT test so two strokes alas would be out. >:(

I'm pretty sure they base the test on the engine. If they based it on the car then an electric conversion would fail as they would be unable to test it for emissions.

In Germany there was a small firm that bought 126 bodies in, and then installed a 2 cylinder, 250cc two stroke engine as used in the 250T goggomobil called the Fiat 126 "figo"
I think it was done because 16 year old's could drive any vehicle under 250cc. 126fan have rebuilt this one :o

That brought back memories :D I used to Kane mine too :P only had to fit a new head gasket once ;D then i found the free wheel lever under the dash :$
