My bis gearbox is wet with oil , i think coming out of the driveshaft seals , is it a big job to sort the seals ? , i will prob remove the box to clean it up , is it possible to self recondition the box ? As first is a bit whiney, this might be due to lack of oil in box due to leak?

I have done mine this week, apart from removing the gearbox drain plug, it is all very easy.

Happened to min, too. It's easy if you've got access to ramps. The worst part is the cost of the two seals! And just remember NOT TO OVERFILL the box with oil.
-
Looking at the book , it says that the driveshaft boot seals are prob what are leaking ? I see that there are them and a iner seal , to replace both i take it you have to remove the shafts from the box , once the covers/boots have been unbolted , do the shafts just pull out ? The manual is a bit complicated in its description and not too clear , i looked for the oil filler plug but could not see it in the book . I would rather remove the box and do both and the two end seals , is it a fairly straight forward job ? I take it you need to support the rear of the engine by hanging it from bootlid engine bay area with a pole and chain etc ?

It may just be worth checking that its not been over filled, also make sure you use the right oil
-
what happens if its overfilled?

You don't have to remove the shafts, just undo them at the hub ends and slide the boots off, the new ones slide back on, there is a tab on the retaining ring that must be in the right place, do up your 4 bolts, put the rest back together. You might find it easier to remove the starter, I did, needed to clean the contacts on it anyway. Only a five minute job removing or replacing the starter anyway.
Replace the split ring and little spring at the end of your drive shafts, you may as well do the rubber boot at that end as well when you are at it. Also a good time to grease your wheel bearings.

I did mine in situ with the wheel jack.

I think I have this problem?
Split inner boot which is leaking, is it the boot that holds the gearbox oil in? (http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/16/1927cde561a9b6c3c33469c3eea56472.jpg)
Thanks

don't forget that first gear will always whine because the gears are sliding mesch gears not helical.
-
Thanks, I've got some new boots now and have drained what was left of the gearbox oil in prep for the change in the new year.

I got this to do to when the weather warms up a bit, for now it's getting topped up!
When things warm up a bit its engine and gearbox out!
Keep me posted with how you get on with it! ;)

Make sure you use the right oil DO NOT USE EP OIL

I was just going to use castrol 80/90 gearbox oil, no good??
I wanted to go 80/90 as that's what manual recommends!?
What oil should I be using? Apologies if this has been brought up before, I thought the oil was gonna be fine. Again engine oil was going to be casrol Gtx is that not any good either? :o
Sod it I'll just go with VS Max engine oil and tutela 80/90 safe bet then!
-
80/90 castrol will be fine so long as it not EP as EP oil (extreme pressure) will knacker the syncro rings up.
-
No thanks for warning I checked it out and the castrol one is EP so I'm gonna go safe and order some proper stuff from recambi, thanks for your help and warning I had no idea what the EP was all about cheers ;)

I think that 126blackbird has a small stock of the Tutella90. I would flash him a pm as it might save you a few quid :)

I've done this job now and it seems not to be leaking, really easy. I've filled with some EP I had lying around so I'm guessing I'm draining and refilling!
