Title: Car would`nt start...
Post by: grubscrew on December 11, 2012, 08:14:35 PM
.... so I left it a few days, until today, a cold -1 in the "open garage", trying to muster some enthusiasm; firstly reset the valves.....no go. Bear in mind, the cause will usually be an insignificant defect.
Then change the points/condenser, as thats most liklely.....no go. Really needed another person to crank the car whilst I looked at the spark plug, but no , wife was out.
I look into the fuel dept, and having some fuel from Esso with free sand in it a while back, I took to the airline and blew through any crud that may be left, only a few grains of sand , but thats all. Put it together again........no go   >:(  Wife returned; " crank the car over please whilst I have a look back here"...........no spark. By this time it was 1 P.M. And I had so much planned.
Lunch.  ...........Out with my "sticky" meter, yes , the needle has decided to stick a quarter up the scale. .Ignition on , put the probe on the plus , other probe on -, no reading, ie not being energised. Out with the ign switch, thats fine including the wiring.Change the coil.........no go :o.......So the blue positive wire to the coil is suspect, sure enough, the blue wire had been soldered but had no continuity from where the insulation had split up to the coil, a distance of 3cms. Crimp a new wire in place......Brummm, brummmm, she runs like a dream :) As I said, was a simple solution, but finding the cause is the interesting bit.Mike. (i blame the cold)

Well written words. I called a mechanic friend of mine over to read this and he smiled and said, "If I had a dollar for every time something like this has happened to me." We feel your pain and are glad you were able to get her running again.

My new purchase won't start and I suspect one of the above is to blame BUT I don't have a clue what any of the above really means so for now I have arranged for a transporter to collect the car for me tomorrow and put it on my driveway.....  Do you give lessons ??? - I would certainly sign up for some lessons to try and solve my starting problem rather than having to rely on and pay a garage.

Your new purchase....is it an aging car, or a NEW new car, `cos if it is then new cars baffle me completely, but yes advice is free..
