Title: Help!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Kyky on December 04, 2012, 10:10:16 AM
Hi all, I  am new to this site and need some help. I have a fiat 126 1973 I'm thinking of selling.
I have been told a range of prices what it may be worth between £200 and £5000 +
I know absolutely nothing about it. So am looking for knowledgeable feedback.

Try and post some photos up and more information on the condition, does it have a MOT etc?  Being a 1973 model these are one of the most sought after of the 126's.

Ok so, non runner for the last 30 years so slightly rusty. Interior very clean as hardly used so I think very low mileage but need to get into the garage to check that. Tyres flat ect.
Also can't attach pic as its not highlighted to me?

The car could well have been a terrific bargain at the £199 you put it on eBay for on the other hand it could possibly be a very bad buy at £500 depending upon the extent of the rust and how much other work needs doing and parts that need replacing. One question would be why was the car left in the garage in 1982 , could it have a major mechanical problem ? After a 30 year lay up you are definately looking at replacing all of the tyres, inner tubes & battery. All other rubber seals and components are going to have to be replaced so that means complete new brake hydraulics, hoses, master & wheel cylinders. If the car runs it would be unwise to drive it without a complete service. To fetch the top end prices the car would have to be in above average condition , unwelded & running on the road with an MOT. Having said all that the car could well be a little gem especially in the hands of a capable enthusiast or someone who can splash the cash . You did put the car in the biggest shop window in the world , eBay and that is probably the only way to establish value. Perhaps you should relist with more details & pics of the car. The good thing is that you did not call in the scrap man  :)

I agree with Rusty, the car is only worth what people are prepared to pay for it and condition and whether it is original are the main factors.

It can look great at first glance but the costs can quickly add up.  One early air cooled car I bought for a 'bargain price' was a bit more air cooled than I expected and basically if I ever ran out of petrol I could power it like Fred Flintstone through the hole in the floor (!!)  :$

The car does look nice (it's my favourite blue colour!) so sticking it on eBay, with a few more pictures and letting the auction run could be the best way to determine value.  Start the auction at a price you are happy with and if it does not sell simply relist.  I listed one of my cars 4 times before it sold and ended up getting a lot more than I expected.  :o

Either way it's great to see that another one of our cars is still out there!  ;D

From what I gather, there a quite a few people interested in this car but only at the right price. It will definitely sell, if the price is right.

However if you want to sell it, you really do need to email people back and return their phone calls.

Tom

I bid £400 when it was at £199 first bid, that was removed when the seller was told it is worth a small fortune.

I contacted the seller and was told:-
Hi,
I have removed the car from auction as I have been advised that it's worth alot more than I initially thought. I am going to get an independant valuation and will get back to you if you are still interested.
Out of interest, how much would you be willing to spend for a car like this?
Thanks
Kyra

I replied explaining I need more photos or a viewing, I then recommended the club.
I bid again £400 when it was relisted and again asked for photos and a viewing. No reply at all.
My bid did not reach the reserve so 'I am out' without actually knowing how rotten the car is, I'm afraid I do not have more cash to gamble.

All I can see by the photos is the headlights are rusted through, it is hard to see if it is a rust crease on the bonnet or bird poo.

Maybe someone will get a bargain.

I always love people that tell others something is worth a fortune, I now ask 'do you want to buy it then? The answer is always 'no, but it is worth a lot more than you are asking.

When there is a Deville on there with MOT and tax for £1500 :o

I see then she decided to totally ignore what she was told by us all,  ???

But you never know it may sell.

If someone is absolutely desperate for a 1973 one and is prepared to undertake a full resto, then it might sell. Peronsally I would love a 1973 one, but at that price its crazy. I will have to do with my 1974 one.

I would be interested to know who on earth told her it was worth that much!

Make do with your 1974 126? A 1974 126 is very much in the same category as a 1973, still quite desirable. Definitely worth restoring.

Six messages sent to view the car and no reply. Personally it looks like he has something to hide.

Retracted my bid, too much of a gamble for me without viewing I'm afraid.

I have told the seller to help their course to get in contact with the 126 club so we shall have to wait and see

What's it all about?  ???

It could be a hoax, a tactic or just someone who is not experienced at selling cars?  >:(

The seller has really good eBay feedback with communications being a well praised aspect.  :-X

So, if it's just genuine inexperience here are some tips for the seller that might help:

1) Fiat 126 Buyers Guide.  ;D

You could buy this if you would like some independent advice:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-126-Buyers-Guide-article-/190767624546?pt=UK_Car_Parts_Vehicles_Automobila_ET&hash=item2c6aa2f162#ht_213wt_1068

It's only £1.99 so probably a good investment, I'd even post you a photocopy for free (!!)

Interesting quote:

'' The best air-cooled 126s fetch £3,000.  Good usable cars fetch around half these prices.''

That's probably why with the condition of yours being unclear and it having been laid up so long and possibly needing (welding, bodywork, bearings, gaskets, oil change, tyres, breaks, road tax, MOT) people are sticking at around a price of half again in the maybe £500 to £500+ range.  I've seen 'barn find' cars of this type including a 1973 and a 1976 sell for that this year and know of another 1976 that is asking just £350.

2) Communication  ;D

It's always best to communicate - even if you don't have a lot you can share.

So, even if, for example, the car is in a friends garage that you can't access to take more pictures or arrange viewings for it's best to let people know or they quickly get fed up or begin to be suspicious.

3) eBay Listing  ;D

eBay is great, but for a sale like this I'd avoid the use of a reserve and go for a clear auction with the starting price set at the minimum you would like to receive.  That makes it much more open and you can't lose, you either get at least what you want or it does not sell but you are no worse off.

I hope that helps.

We are all passionate about these cars and funds permitting I am sure that someone on here would love to buy it so if you are serious about selling you need look no further!

As a consequence of Dave's bid retraction, I am the highest bidder. No response to date to my request for more photos and a viewing. Judging from the poor response, bidding has not taken off. With 5 days to go, at this point, early 126's would usually hover at a four figure sum.

My apologies to everyone for not replying to all your emails but I am currently in the process of moving my grandmother with Alzheimer's into a care home. Hence me trying to sell the car from her garage, I can't upload more pictures at the moment until I can get to a computer which i hope to do in a couple of days as they won't upload from the mobile site. At this time I also can't find the keys so the car will be sold as seen.
I would also like to thank Tom for his obvious understanding and patience at this difficult time, whilst deliberately trying to sabotage the sale of this car. I am glad you withdrew your bid as I would now not do business with someone with such an inconsiderate attitude.
As most of you would understand my grandmothers welfare is paramount to me and my family and means more than selling a piece of metal.

Hi Kyky,
I am very sorry to hear about your grandmother. I hope everything goes well in moving her to a care home. It is quite an emotional time, and I know how difficult it can be, having gone through the process myself before. Can I kindly suggest that you withdraw the car from the auction until perhaps she is settled, so that you can focus on the sale of the 126. As you have probably gathered, there is a demand for early 126s and is worth relatively a lot to an enthusiast or collector.

I understand more than most as I work in a care home and have done for 6 years. I know it is a tough time for families. I assure you she will be better taken care of.

Pleased to see you had time to cancel the first auction and add a large reserve though.
Tom? I withdrew my bid, my names not Tom. Who tried to sabotage the auction?

Personally I too would also remove the auction, give the car a wash and get some better pictures, I assure you the members here are certainly the ones in the know. Spring is the best time to sell classic cars just as the show season starts.

Why not get the car fixed up you will fall in love with it very quickly ;D

Tom, how would you know what my reserve price is?
Title: Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Kent126 on December 10, 2012, 06:41:52 PM
Hi Kyky,
I am not into dishonesty, or sabotage. Those who know me will know this, and why.  :$

I have not bid on this car, nor have I retracted any bid. My eBay username is 'holtersmill'. If you check the bid history, this will confirm that I have not bid on the car. You will of had emails from me asking question about it though, as I was interested in it initially. I was the one who asked for your phone number via email which you gave me. I left you a voicemail with my phone number, so you have my contact details and I have nothing to hide, hence my open reply on this forum.

In answer to your question, yes I do know the reserve price as someone emailed me and told me.

Even still I am interested in the car, if it is for sale at the right price. Unfortunately £2,000 is far too much for this vehicle, and it has been way over valued.

I am very sorry to hear of your grand mother, and I hope you are still able to sell the car no matter who it is too.

Regards,
Tom

I would be suprised if anyone would bid so much without viewing a car that is well known to rust so badly. The car has been standing for 30 years.
Requests for pictures of the rust prone areas are still not forthcoming.

Kyky, if you read comments people are trying to help you. We do know the values as most of us have more than one of these cars and watch price fluctuations constantly. There is a very good chance that the bidder will be from this site (or join soon after buying).

Not allowing anyone to view the car or provide pictures will always put of prospective bidders.

Many thanks for the additional photos. You may have to do someting about the fact that the car maybe stuck in the garage. Four flat tires and brakes that are potentially inoperable may put interested buyers off.

No it won't as they have no idea at all. ;D
looking at the tiny pictures added on Ebay the car is near mint inside.

So Tom, whoever emailed you has encroached on my personal business there is no way of seeing a reserve price without doing it underhandly ie hacking my ebay account and jeopardising the security of my accounts. Also you must of wanted to find out, someone wouldn't just randomly pry in to my business and then e mail you. I find this very dishonest.
Title: Re: Help!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: dajwid on December 11, 2012, 03:49:38 PM
Still no replying regarding viewing. If the reserve is £2000 though. It would not matter anyway I,m afraid.

Who advised you it was worth £2000  ::) certainly no one from this site surely :o

It is listed as a parts car.

They may well have done, but that has nothing to do with me. If someone emails me with some useful info, then I cant help that.

Anyway I dont intend on getting into an internet arguement.

Good luck with the sale

Tom

Well whatever the reserve is, stick with it! The auction price it is going for at the moment is low. Get the car sorted. Just clean it well and fix the flat tires so that you can push the car out for potential buyers to see it. You will be amazed with what you will get for it. Preparation is everything. I agree with Dajwid's suggestion of trying to sell the car in the spring.

Oh what a big suprise it reached pretty much what it is worth. The person that told you it was worth a fortune was wrong and the enthusiasts were right.

Maybe now you will read the advise you were given.

In fact £770 is a fantastic price for a parts/ resto car.
