Title: 1974 Fiat 126 'Tetto Aprible' Restoration
Post by: Kent126 on August 15, 2012, 01:44:53 PM
'Biagio' - Italian for 'Stutterer, or Little Stutter'

So the time has finally come, where most of the DIY in the house has been completed, and I have the time and money to start my restoration of my 126 sunroof model from 1974. This is the only 126 car I have, and I have had to resist urges to buy other working models after selling my old white 1984 one last year. But I have decided to put all my time and hard earned cash into this one, which I know will be the right decision when it has been finished.

This car has been sat in my garden for the last 10 months since buying it, and previous to that it was sat on Ladislavs driveway for approx 2 years (am I right, Ladislav?)

I am told the car is almost complete so will need to go through the boxes and see what if anything is missing.

Brief history of the car;

Built in 1974 at the Italian factory (proven with dating certificate from Fiat UK) and has an original factory fitted sunroof. I believe only a small handful of these are now left, can anyone can confirm or deny?

It was rescued years ago by a gentleman from SE London who saved the shell from an automechanics college where they used to practice welding on cars. It was rebuilt using a donor car which the gentlemans sister had at the time. I still have some original paperwork from the donor car including the VIN plates. It was allegedly completely restored, although the paint work looks like it has been handpainted with a brush in places and not a great job has been done either.

Some of the welding is crap, and will need to be amended along with the new welding that needs to be done.

It would appear that there is electrical wiring for an electric starter motor, a rev counter has been wired in and some other bits. All of which will be removed.

Gentleman came over from the local bodyshop to inspect it and has given me some advice as welding and spraying is not something which I really want to attempt myself.

Im currently just getting ideas of cost, and various ways of acheiving the end goal (and trying to avoid getting further 'tellings off'!!!) :$

On first inspection it would appear most of the issues can be repaired in situ, with just both rear arches needing replacing. Both sills and the front will however probably be replaced as I have the spare panels anyway.

The hard bit about the whole project will be getting started as I dont have a huge plethora of mechanical knowledge, but just enough to 'get by'.

There are about 94 photo's here in an album, most taken by ladislav, some by myself of its current condition. I wil update this thread as and when work takes place with pictures where possible.

http://photobucket.com/1974fiat126

I am hoping to have the car finished for Slovakia 2013, although I realise that this could be a tall order with work etc.

The aim is for a total resotration from ground up, with some slight engine modifcations for power, and some decent suspension, brakes etc (due to having a heavy right foot, and an agressive driving style!  :o)

But I do want to keep it looking as original looking as I can, as I think it would be a shame to spoil it and i'm aiming to keep the dark blue paint from the factory.

Anyway, enough babble for now. See you all at retro rides (in my rover!  :$)

Watch this space!

Good luck with the restoration, Tom, that's a super rare car you've got there...it will definitely be worth it once done!  ;D

Im not sure how many are left, I heard the figure of 4 being mentioned but unfortunately the fact that it has a sunroof isn't mentioned on the V5, so howmanyleft and DVLA records probably wont be able to asist.

I don't think it is a de-ville. The de-ville was produced in the early 80's and was the latest sunroof model at the time, so it would have just been registered as a Fiat 126, there is no way of telling how many early 70's models with sunroofs are left.

According to How Many Left there is a 126 TA model 3 licensed and 2 on SORN. The T normaly stands for the sunroof.
The De-Ville was marketed as the Personal 4 in Europe and as Tom says they were produced from late 70`s early 80`s this is a very early sunroof chrome bumper model and must be quiet rare.

I definitely know of an other one(unfortunately just rusting away on someones drive).

TA (in case you did not know) stands for Tetto Aprible which I think is Italian for sun roof.

I did see one earlier in the year but it looked like it could have been a DIY job with the sun roof so your car is really, really rare as an original chrome bumper sun roof...I've got a book that shows some of the pictures of these when they first came out and they look amazing!

Good news all around then!  ;D Thanks for the input guys. Although on my V5, the car appears to be registered as just Fiat 126 with no 'TA' suffix.

Which makes me wonder how accurate these figures are!?

We know it is a genuine Italian built car though due to the dating letter from Fiat confirming when it was built.

Hmmmmm.

Aprible means opening, not that I'm pedantic or anything  :D

New rear arches, fuel tank and VIN plate

New front panel

New door pillar panels from 126fan, Slovakia.

Also just arrived an original voxson radio to replace the old missing one;

Waiting for a couple more bits to arrive, and I am finally in discussions with someone about having the welding done.  ;D

Possible house move next year, and maybe a change of job locations is likely to slow progress but we shall see.  :(

Good luck on the restoration! As mentioned previously, these early models are desirable, so is a good investment!! It could potentially be worth more than what you will spend on it.

**UPDATE - 18th January 2013**

Progress still very slow. Still trying to get my kitchen finished amongst other things. Lots of bits ordered and slowly arriving though.

I've had a bit of a bad start to 2013, I got assaulted at work and ended up in hospital, then I ended up being shunted up the rear in Devon on the motorway which resulted in my car being written off and being off work for two weeks. On the plus side, i've now got some extra cash to spend on the 126!  ;D

So, hopefully fingers crossed nothing else will happen and I can start work on the car as opposed to just buying bits for it!

The next update will be very soon when it finally goes off for welding!  ;D

No it wasn't, i've ended up with a new car as a result of that shunt. But yes the gentleman involved in the assault got 'dealt with'  ;)

Anyhow, welding is finally booked in to be done. Phew. Thought i'd never see the day when this project would get started. Anyway, some more bits arrived today, with some more bits arriving shortly;

Shiny new sports suspension from Italy;

Nice stuff Tom  :) Give those steel rear spring mounts a good coat of something before you fit them or they will rust very quickly. Just one question , is that rear number plate right for your 126 ?

Rusty, thanks. I did pull the spring seats out of the box and think to myself, 'they aren't going to last very long!  :o'

The square numberplate is correct, because its the earlier 70's model it has a different engine cover with space for the square plate. You got me worried so I have just been out to double check, but its correct. Good job because those plates were expensive!  :$

Kev, they were far too much but if you ordered a set of standard plates for your modern car and then double the price you wouldn't be far off!

No parcels today  :(

But I thought I should treat myself to some nice shiny bits  ;D

If you speak to Tippers Vintage and Classic plates, they might be able to bend the plates for you on manufacture, to fit your 2cv. As all their plates are specialist I don't see why they wouldn't be able to.

As for being road legal on an '85, I think they probably would be. They wouldn't be period, but they should be road legal. In the 80's, cars went over from metal plates with plastic numbers to aluminium pressed plates.

All of the different styles are on their website.

New sports coil arrived today for my 126. Can't imagine it makes any difference to a 'normal' one, but it was the same price. Also now my 126 is insured on a classic car policy and it was dirt cheap! So much so, when it is running I might get rid of my other car!

Finally, the car went off for welding today. It is now at the bodyshop around the corner from me and I am just awaiting a phonecall to go back and take some photos once they have set about cutting it up.

It was amusing us towing it, and I should have got some photos. Imagine a land rover pulling this 126 which is essentially a shell up a hill, with me crouched in the drivers side (there are no seats in it) steering it whilst be towed. Crouced with my head poking out of the sunroof and waving at people who were looking in dis-belief, shouting 'Morning!'  ;D

Some more bits arrived today from Italy this time, it took a while as my Italian isn't brilliant. Full set of front and rear drums, wheel cylinders and brake shoes. The Italian gentleman even sent me some awesome free 500 keyrings!  ;D

Restoration has reached its first stumbling block. A full assesment by the bodyshop has thrown up a few little issues, nothing that cannot be rectified.

However, I am in need of some outer door pillar panels before I can go any further, and I have a feeling that I my struggle finding some.

Axel Gerstl. I had to buy two whole side panels from the bis, then they had to get a local workshop in the same neighbourhood to cut them down for me. They discarded the rest of the panels, and just sent me the bits I needed. Very expensive way of doing it, but needs must! Couldn't wait to find a suitable and clean donor car.

Finally, some real progress to report.  ;D

Most of the front end has been cut off the car, ready for welding. Went over to the garage this morning to check on the progress. Car will be moved out today, and the other side and wing will be cut out. According to the body shop, he has never seen a car constructed in a way like the little 126. When cutting this much out of a car and re-assembling, he states its like a jigsaw puzzle due to the amount of panels that overlap.

Anyway, here are some pics.  :o

Finally, some more welding updates this morning. Other wing has been cut off, which has revealed some more rust holes, and also more holes have been found in the door pillar. More welding required!

How it looked this morning;

Both door pillar outerskins welded in. Bit of tidying to do before wings and indicator panels go back on.

Well. Today's update doesn't bring great news, but they way things are going I wasn't expecting positive news. Call from bodyshop today stating that all of the front end of the car is pinned back on almost ready for welding. There is one slight problem though, in that the nearside wing doesnt fit back on correctly. Something a little disturbing has been pointed out (I can tell you because im not planning on selling the car). It appears that it may have previously been involved in a shunt at some point to its front nearside corner.

The front bracket which attaches the front panel to the body of the car has been bent inwards with an impact. There is a crease which is causing the front of the car to sit slightly twisted, meaning that the new nearside panel doesnt fit where it should.

Some pics attached, not easy to see in the photos, but you can see the bad fit of the wing.

Some adjustment of the bracket is now likely to be required, possibly involving cutting it out and reshaping it to weld it back in the correct place. Portapower first to see if it can be rectified  :o

I just stuck my head out in the rain to check and the bonnet does have a bit of side and front overhang above the front wing. On the other hand I am convinced that my 500L has had a few "knocks" and is probaly a little shorter than it should be  :$

Hang in there, Tom...I've been busy eyeing up a new vehichle so not had chance to look properly yet.

I remember seeing one on eBay France a while back, will do some more Googling next week and let you know what I find...have you tried Franco at Ricambio....he may have something hidden away in his treasure chest?

Cheers my man. I think I may have found one on eBay france, but the item is located in Italy. I have just emailed the chap to make sure it is factory stock and not repro. it looks like the real deal, so lets hope there are no communication issues!

If you do come across one though, please do let me know just in case. I'm hoping to find one fairly soon, as the chap wants to finish my car and get it back to me now.

Im going to be a little 'bis'y tomorrow, but Tuesday I have a list of things to do, and Franco is on my list of calls to make!

There was a guy about a year ago that had lots of panels, NOS.

Follow this:- http://club126uk.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6135.0

I know it is old but worth a try, he had it all stored at his mums house.

Phoned Franco at Ricambio this morning, he is going to have a look in his warehouse this afternoon and see what he can find.

Franco managed to dig out and send me a new wing from his treasure trove and it arrived this morning. It's still re-production but it is genuine Italian and not Polish. Took it over to the body shop and it has now been pinned into place. The difference is amazing, the fit is almost perfect straight away.

Another lesson learnt, don't buy cheap Polish panels if your are restoring an early Italian aircooled car!

I now have a Polish wing going spare if anyone can make use of it? Just cover the postage.

Welding is commencing this afternoon, and hopefully the updates will continue.

Went to Surrey this morning to collect these little beauties.

Italian Borrani wheels with Abarth hubcaps. Been looking for a nice set of wheels for ages, and these popped up yesterday. Already fitted with four brand new tyres.

(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s191/thomasrenshaw/100_2548_zpse8caa264.jpg) (http://s152.photobucket.com/user/thomasrenshaw/media/100_2548_zpse8caa264.jpg.html)

Im not over fussed with the Abarth caps so, might end up selling them. Havent quite decided though. I would prefer some borrani caps or ones with 'fiat' on them. If anyone has any, would consider a swap.

I'm now also looking for original early rear arches, as the ones I have are not quite the right profile.

Wow! Finally some progress. Front end is finally welded on, just need to tidy the welds up, and weld in indicator panels. Quality of workmanship is excellent, shame about the pace.

All good things come to those who wait I guess.

The front panel and front offside wing were fiat factory originals, the nearside wing was italian reproduction, couldnt find an original anywhere! The indicator panels are Polish.

Bonet is original, and the door hinge panels came from Germany, so they are probably Polish too!

Fit is great, and it was worth waiting for the correct panels. It has made a huge difference!

Hurrah!!!!! Finally some more progress. After going in on Friday and having a rather, how shall we put it, frank discussion about the rate of progress being acheived, the car is finally being finished over the next two days.

Today the car has had new rear arches and one of the old rusty floor pans has been cut out ready for a new one. Hopefully some more pics tomorrow;

I don't have a power source there unfortunately  :( It will be a lot better then where it was stored before though. Unless of course you can get dehumidifiers that dont run off the mains.

I will probably be tempted to hand spray the red areas in blue primer, for further protection. The car will need to be rubbed down anyway before painting.

Yes 'chat'  :$  ;D

Now to decide wether to use the same bodyshop again or not. The quality is good, and they have assured me if they get to spray it, it will be in and all done within a week. Also they have given me a good price for cash, because of how long they had it before.

Hmmmm.

Either way i've got to get around to stripping it first in the next couple of weeks. I am quite busy with some personal stuff though, but hopefully there will be some more progress before the new year.

I applied for a job two months ago with Devon and Cornwall Police with the hope of moving back home again, but things didn't work out how I hoped, so looks like im stuck in Kent for a bit.  :(

Every cloud and all that though, means I can spend some more cash on the car and get things moving again. I'm now in talks with the bodyshop about getting it in for spraying before Christmas (present to myself!)

Hopefully I can start putting it back together in the new year.

Just an idea but you can get cystals that soak up moisture? We used them in an old house to stop the windows misting up?!

I move to my new house within the next four weeks. I now have my own garage with power, so the car will be moved from my rental garage to mine. I will then invest in a garage heater and de-humidifier :-)

One month to go and I can re-commence work in the car! :-)

I am going to commence stripping it back to the bare shell this week in order to for it to off to the bodyshop for prep work and spraying. Let the restro re-commence. Hopefully some regular updates from now on.

Today I got it up on the ramps to give it a quick inspection to see what work is required.

Looking good, Tom...if you need a morale boost get the wheels sandblasted and painted and you will feel like you're nearly there!  ;D

Rear wiring loom cleaned today, with some soldering done to repair some bodging with tape, and general tidy. Start the front loom tomorrow. Such a time consuming job!

Car is now booked in for it's full re-spray. It's going into Full Circle Classics at Marden on 4th August for their 'Ferrari Finish'.

It should come back to me finished by 18th August and then I can start rebuilding it. :-)

I have a small list of bits I will be looking for which I shall post shortly.

Progress will be slowish until it's sprayed but everything is being thoroughly cleaned, reconditioned and stored ready to be put back on the car.

I had to acquire a new dash cover, as mine had a hole in it and it just wouldn't look right on the finished car. Got this spare from a forum member and today have given it a good clean and shine :-) after all that's what the kitchen worktop is for!

Car finally stripped down to the bare shell. Going off shortly, trailer booked, hired help booked.

Absolute nightmare taking all of the internals out of the doors! Won't be easy rebuilding them.

Also found some more little rust holes which will need welding.

Just gotta drill the holes in the doors this evening for the mirrors!

In the absence of much else to do, lots of stripping and cleaning of bits still. New fuel sender and gasket fitted to new tank.

Speedo stripped down and cleaned. Perspex face replaced with new glass for shiny new look. Just debating whether to drill the clock back to 0 miles as the car will be practically brand new when finished. :-/

Replacement dash panel cleaned and shined. Previous owner had put a naff rev counter in and ruined the dash in the process. New holes drilled for extra push buttons. One will be for electric start, and the other for a nice loud air horn! :-)

During my rebuild I took the doors off and laid them flat, much easier to refit the internal bits and pieces. Obviously newly painted doors need to be laid on something soft to protect the new paint.

Popped down today to check on the car. It has now been taken back to bare metal as there was a lot of old pooty paint on it.

Few more dodgy bits found hiding under all the paint, such as dodgy filler. The whole job may take an extra week but I don't mind as it's in good hands.

Popped down after work today. More of the rot found has been removed and re welded. Slowly but surely getting there.

Have to say I'm pretty impressed with the workshops skills and knowledge.

The welding is far superior to the chap who had it before.

Some more progress. Rear half of the car filled rubbed down and in primer. They have found a couple more little rust craters on the roof which they have dig out and need attention, but the arches look and feel really smooth.

I had to supply them with some photos of the rear lights so they could  match up the weld lines. Whoever had this car before had filled the lines in which was wrong, but they have dug them out as they should be and they look much better!

Still gonna be a couple of weeks they reckon, but I'm happy they are slowly doing it. And to be fair I need my garage at the moment for storage whilst I rewire my house!

Went down to see the 126 today, they have done loads since I saw it last. They have spent ages going around perfecting the bodywork. All the imperfections have gone, poo welding sorted out, welds ground down and everything smoothed out. They have done all the little touch ups I wanted too.

I can see why it has taken so long but it is looking superb. It's now all in primer and almost ready for painting. Next step is rubbing down and base coat applying.

You really so have to see it in person to see the quality of work they have put in, I'm really happy with it so far.

We have discussed when it will be ready and I have been told the shell will be back with me end of this month. Doors and bonnet may take a couple weeks longer as they need welding.

Woo hoo! The car is back home and fully sprayed! Looks awesome! There are a couple of little things that I think need addressing, and the car may need to go back to them for the day. Other than that, it's finally coming together! Another big hurdle jumped!

Next step, waxoyl the hell out of it!

Some of the photos make it look a lot lighter than it is, and some make it look darker. Due to how shiny it is it's difficult to take any good photos but you get the idea! ;-)

No. Ha ha not a chance! I have to divide my time between the 126, renovating the house and the missus.

I did however get quite a bit done today.

Car fully waxoyled. What a mess that makes! Also stings when you get it in your eyes!

Made my accelerator pedal serviceable today.

Seals and rear windows in.

Wiring loom roughly in place but needs work and repairing in a couple of places.

Thought I'd better add an update. Windscreen back in, ive managed to wire in an extra door switch for passenger side (one of my little upgrades 😊) and the car is now up on axel stands. The suspension has been removed completely from the car, ready to send off for sandblasting and powder coating. This week will see the bottom of the car cleaned and painted ready to bolt everything back on again.

Also picked up a nicely tuned engine this week.

Slowly bit surely it's coming together.

Maybe. Depends how much work we get done! ;-)

Whilst the suspension is off, I'm painting the underneath of the car in underbody sealant which will keep it rust free and has transformed the look too.

Still under sealing. Takes forever by hand! Looking nice and new though! Also been adding some bits into the car. Ordered new rear suspension arms as the old ones are so badly rusted around the bushes, they are not worth spending the time cutting them out, then shot blasting and powder coating the arms back to new again. The arms are cheap at axel gerstl so I've made the decision to just to replace them instead. Hopefully when they arrive this week I can start rebuilding the back of the car.

One of the bolts holding on the steering idler snapped today trying to remove the nut so I could have a mare of a job coming up to remove that completely.

Hurrah! New rear swing arms have arrived. Hmmm shiny!

Been cleaning up and restoring some of the smaller bits today. Handbrake connectors, stub washers, stub ends and all the bolts have been cleaned and sprayed ready to go back on. Just need to do the rear wheel bearings and I can rebuild the rear swing arms. :-)

Well I'm not gonna lie, what a pig of a job that was! Today I started putting the rear suspension back on the car. Because the springs and shocks are shorter being sports suspension, it was a pig to fit.

The spring is so hard I had to really jack the car up and compress the spring so much to get the shock connected at both ends. I can already tell the ride is gonna be hard! There isn't much play in the suspension and I had to also modify the bump stop by cutting it down to give the arm some clearance.

Pictures attached. Looks sweet though and with the wheel offered up, it looks like it's gonna be low! :-)

Anyway, one side down and one to go.

Finished painting the underneath of the car in black underseal today. A job I hope I will never have to do again. Super messy! Took off the track rods, steering box and idler today. All filthy and a pain to remove. Cleaned the steering box and idler up. Bushes on the idler will need replacing, and the box needs new seals.

Had to borrow a ball joint splitter as I didn't have one. Nightmare job as everything was rusted in place.

Anyway hopefully some more progress tomorrow.

Sadly not yet BV, but now that the house is almost finished I can crack on over the winter. I have promised myself that it will be on the road for the spring for definite.  ;D

Few jobs to do, few more bits needed to order but it's getting there.

Hoping to really use it next year and get it to a few of the shows finally!

Have you got some more pics of Mrs BV's minter?

Dropped steering box off today to a friend for him to have a look at for me, hopefully new gaskets and oil and it'll be good as new.

Also dropped a box of bits off today at Custom WyteLyne in Medway for shotblasting and powder coating.

Front brake backing plates went off for shot blasting and powder coating yesterday and also the steering box has been sent off to ICS classic car steering in Birmingham for a complete refurb. Trying to find anyone who sells new or recon RHD boxes is a nightmare.

Rang Ricambio and they said they are like hens teeth.

Needless to say a fair bill probably coming my way.

Anyway hopefully things are moving and it'll be back on its wheels very soon!
