Hi all, jst bought my first 126, I live near lanark in Scotland. Its a 1988 BIS in a primrose yellow colour. Pick it up on Wednesday. Seems in good nick, but 1st and reverse are knacked. Looking for a good second hand gearbox, or I'm I better buying a kit for £180 and rebuild it. Advice needed!

Try it first are the gears knackered or just noisy.
Welcome to the club :-)

Thanks for the welcome, the car has no first or reverse, the guy I bought it from has had it for ten years, it got noisy, threw some teeth, and now is buggled!!!!

Hi, and welcome to the club good to hear there is another one in Scotland. I dont have a bis gearbox only an old 500 and some air cooled. I have been looking for a bis box for some time but no luck therefore I would look at a repair kit unless you can locate a second hand box. Where abouts in Lanark are you I'm just outside Airdrie. Will you be going to the Scottish Italian Car Day? anyone else going?

Hi Ralph, I live in Lesmahagow, does an aircooled gearbox not fit a BIS? I didnt know about the Italian Day, I'm racing that day unfortunately. I take it you have an aircooled?

Craig yes I have a couple of air cooled, the bell housing and diff are different don't know about the gearing in the box, maybe someone can confirm or not.

Welcome on the forum.

the gearing is the same except for the 4th gear which is longer in the bis and allows for more speed, i would always suggest a box that fully works through all the gears but shorter at the top to be the wiser of the two options as you know just change the bell housing over and obviously you may also know to not mix crown and pinions on the differential from two units for best results but then again most gearboxes normally all come complete with diff and driveshafts complete second hand..

Thanks for the welcomes. here come some stupid questions!
So if I get an aircooled gearbox I can fit it? Just need to change bellhousing? Now norammly that just a few bolts, is that the same on a 126? A chap near me, Ralph, says he has aircooled gearboxes, so that could be ideal. I pick up the "beast" tomorrow, very excited!!!!!

Hello and welcome to the Forum!

Thanks!

its only four bolts inside if i remember correctly and a bit more on the outer (i cant think) .. all i can say is remove the aircooled bell housing first and the bis bell housing goes back on the same in reverse if that makes sense!? either way ralph is a top bloke and will set you right so have no fear!

Thanks for that, I have emailed Ralph to see if he wants to sell a gearbox
