Title: More problems - Stripped Exhaust Stud!
Post by: ciaoflyer on May 02, 2012, 07:47:52 PM
OK  Terrible rattling noise coming from the engine of the Bis.  O further investigations turns out that new stud I bought for the exhaust has come loose and stripped the thread in the head >:(

This I believe to repair is an engine out job and I assume I can fit a helicoil, is it M8 and can anyone recommend a supplier before I make a purchase?  Unless there is another way to repair!

Thanks guys!

is the stud stripped on the engine side you can't get to. Otherwise you can get a re-coil or helicoil kit and you can drill and tap without having to remove the cyl head.

I had to do mine as they where all falling out you can buy helicoil kits from eBay quite cheaply and I did all of mine in situ you can always get one of those 90 degree converters for your drill if it's a tight space..

The tapping size drill for the helicoil will be about 8.5 mms. If the thread is totaly stripped & has been rattling around a bit you probably already have an 8 mms plus hole there. I have found that with the soft aluminium casting if you are carefull you will not need any drilling. Those kits are also available on eBay & I have one exactly the same. The tap will be an intermediate one , that is it will have a bit of a taper on the end to locate in the hole as opposed to a 1st (taper M10 x 1.25) which will have a lot longer taper. You should just be able to re-tap the head for the helicoil but check that tap is well aligned especialy at the start.  :)

OK Helicoil kit arrived and looks fine!  Now once repaired do I Copperslip the stud and how tight do I do the stud up?

Bad news - drill and 90 angle won't fit in so engine has to come out unless there is another way..... :(

I could but that is gonna upset a gasket that has never been a problem so I don't really want to do it!

Snap the drill bit in half?

i would not drill on a bis head in situ its just too tight for room and if you drill it wrong then you are buggered!!!
maybe its the long way round but if you do not wish to remove the head then drop the engine in one lump?

Thanks guys!  Went out during a break in showers and have finally decided that engine is coming out!  Then once done can tidy some other bits up and then fit exhaust back on and put back into the car!
