Title: Very excited newbie!
Post by: amybethcarr on April 17, 2012, 11:09:49 AM
Hello everyone, I have just got home from buying my first Fiat 126!!! it is a 126p w reg made in 2000.....and he is FAB!! I am having our mobile mechanic man round in the next few days to check him over, as he is a bit grumpy in the mornings when i ask him to start.....any handy tips are appreciated....but my extremely limited knowledge of car things, makes me think he is not firing quite right, when he is chilly.
Anyway, I am beginning the pamper project today one it stops raining. He has a very funky carpet ceiling which I love but it keeps shedding on my head, and the seats are a very lovely pleather material i think, so some super snazzy liberty type fabric is going to be making its way on to that! I can hear you all groaning at me!!!
I also reeeealy want to paint him. His paint job at the moment is pretty bad, attempts to fill around the windscreen has resulted in a slightly lumpy two tone effect. He is a wonderful blue colour at the moment and I have a burning desire to decorate him with some green grass at the bottom with tulips sprouting from it!! ooooh and probably some clouds on the roof!!.....and the groans turn in to gasps.
I wanted to know really, if anyone else had done a smiliar thing at any point.....oh to try and defend myself slightly, I am an artist and hope to have my fab little car as a bit of an advertising tool too.

Any advice on spraying, stencils, hand painting, etc, and then interior stuff too, would be greatly appreciated!!

I love my car and he is the second best thing i have ever bought....first being my springer spaniel that sits very proudly on the passenger seat!!

Bye for now xx

Welcome  :D

They are always a bit grumpy in the morning, always allow 5 minutes warm up time or until it runs smoothly with the choke off.

That is one of the things I love about him....but its getting him started thats the problem!! seems to require a stroke and a few soft words before he decides to get going so I can let him get warm!

They take a little bit of time to fill the carb, perfectly normal. Mine starts third time after sitting for more than an hour. Some people have changed to an electric fuel pump to remedy this, but if you can live with it, there is no point. Still get your mechanic to check it over though, leaky pipes and pump can make it worse.

Really not trying to be patronising, are you using the choke to start the car when cold?

Welcome, the paint job idea sounds  ??? ::), but My wife and daughters say it sounds fantastic.
Is the car on UK plates?

 Welcome to the forum.

Yours would have electronic ignition being one of the last models, so I`m assuming is down to the carb which also has an electronic choke system and they seem to play up sometimes. If you have no joy with it, you can always try a standard earlier type carburetor. Refurbished ones come up on eBay for about £50.

Looking forward to seeing your design ideas, not sure about the grass though :$

Wwelcome to the forum, Amy, I'm not too technical so can't help you with the starting problem but this may help protect you from the ceiling... ;D

There are quite a few of us near you (well in west Yorkshire anyway) so hope to see you at one of the meets!

Ooooh thank you for all the replies everyone!

Don't worry about the choke question.....I don't offend easily! I am using it yes, but it seems to make it worse if i have it completely out, so am trying having it on half, then if it starts to go, then letting it out on to full. No idea if that is the right thing to do though!!

Thank you for the ebay carb suggestion, although will have to google what that actually is! hopefully the mechanic man will be able to explain this too!

He is on UK plates yep, and the paint job will look great, don't worry, I will update with photos. Have been doing some research and there is some amazing work being done with something called Rust-Oleum. Since the previous owners have done a pretty shoddy job before, I am thinking I can only improve him!

LOVE the helmet, thank you for that! Very excited about coming to my first meet, is all that info on here somewhere, I am still finding my way around. I am also can't wait to persuade my 6ft something boyfriend to pour himself in the passenger seat and come with me!

Thanks everyone  ;D

The boyfriend problem is easy, The front seat simply slides out, then he sits in the back with plenty of legroom  ;D

Members map, if you want to put yourself on there. Gives everyone more idea of potential people able to get to a meet. Just stick the marker in a nearby town if you don't want people to know exactly where you are.

this one always pops up do you put your foot on the clutch when you start the car? as depressing the clutch pedal will help ease the load on the engine during starting? as for colour/paint its your car do what you want and bugger all the cynics!

Welcome Welcome! Very interested to see your paint job... My Fiat 126 is my first car and I have always dreamed of painting my first car but the original Orange paint work suits him so much I have decided to keep it - It would be wrong to paint him. but I think if your car has got a bad paint job then go for it! I'm getting an old Bedford van soon, and it really needs a paint job so I'm going to unleash my creative side on that vehicle instead.
Photo's please... we like photos.

Hey everyone, great to hear from you all! I will get on the photos asap although the project is of course a little behind schedule.....I am from Yorkshire however I am not a fan of customizing my car in the rain!! So far, one door panel on the inside is covered with a wonderful grass fabric.
I seem to have mastered the art of starting him up, just takes a bit of practice. The chugging, which seems to happen occasionally and never for any particular reason, I am assured is just a quirk of the car, and down to its limited cylinders!
I had an amusing conversation with my mechanic yesterday when I asked him why there are not enough leads for me to fit my ancient radio from my mothers old car......he pointed out that since "Eddie" as he is formally known now, has no speakers, i would struggle to hear the music anyway!! Ebay here i come!
ooooh and a little bit of advice please......what oil do i put in him?? my Haynes is not the easiest of reads for a car dunce like myself!
photos soooooon I promise!
