Fitted new stub axles a while back and have greased regularly but there is a surprising amount of play in them :( It seems that when I grease a small amount goes into the pin but a lot comes out of the locking pin.
Am I not doing something right, does the wheel need to be in a special position, on or off the ground or can it be heated to get the grease in?
-
To my knowledge none but I may be wrong. I have seen the mechanics grease my Bis stub axles. They merely turned the wheel fully to one side so that they can see whether the grease goes through inside okay.
Is this the new stub axles that Franco of Ricambio replaced from the first set?

Yes they are!

I am worried about these. The new one which has been installed for about three months takes grease but it wont go to the top of the pin. If I rock the wheel I can actually see the pin moving in the bush, this must be an MOT fail.
If I can't get grease in I assume I have really wasted my money on the stub axels and will be replacing them again at the next MOT >:( >:(
-
What are the legal warranties on the part and fitment?
-
You could try getting a bit moody with ricambio
-
I have sent an email to Ricambio and am waiting to see what happens.
Myself and a friend have had the car jacked up tonight to see what we can do. Both wheels have been off and we have tried several different ways to grease the pins, rotating the wheels while greasing, weight on the wheels while greasing etc. But to no avail, the grease just comes out the locking pin and goes nowhere near the bottom or top of the pin. The stub axle that is only 3 months old has a huge amount of play in it that you can actually see it moving, ironically more play than the older stub!
I will have to see what Ricambio say.
-
That's unfortunate. I noticed that it was easier to press more grease into the kingpins when the wheels were off the ground but new kingpins shouldn't have any play. I bought a refurbished axle stub/kingpin complete and I could barely get it moving at first. I had to put it into a vice, grease it and rotate it continuously.

Good mornin' you guys, I am just sitting here enjoying a cool beer & checking out the forum, 6 pm here :D
Like GT says the factory recon units are very hard to turn by hand when not fitted. You have got to be a bit suspect about anything less and any play is a real no no.
Silly question what side is the dodgy one ?
-
Dodgy one is near side
-
When I lived in Sicily some of the "shady" shops just replaced the washers and not the kingpins and bushings. They felt snug at first but took no time at all to wear the washers
-
Going to my friendly MOT man on Friday to get his opinion. If I need to change should I buy these and how do I go about doing so.....

I have used this company in the past, Very good.
Double nipples are much better ' Stop Smirking at the back' :o

I can't understand it can you help me get in touch?

I have now decided to rebuild the original stub axles as I never exchanged them when I bought the new ones.
The nipple on the original is at the top as opposed to the ones from Ricambio which are in the middle next to the locking pin. Also by examining the original stub axle there is a space at the bottom for a second nipple but it has not been drilled and installed. So the plan is to rebuild and install a second nipple!
At least then I know they will have been built correctly!
ps Are the standard polish made pins and bush kits ok?
-
The kit i fitted was Polish and it needed only a minimum amount of reaming.

Did Ricambio come back to you with regards to the defective reconditioned stub axles?

Same question
-
not yet....
-
Will these fit the BIS?
http://www.126fan.sk/eshop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=275
And what size reamer do I need, 15mm or adjustable?
-
Back from New Zealand now , great trip :) Kept checking the forum when I could.
I asked what side because I have an off side factory reconditioned stub axle assembly going spare so wrong side for you.
I used a king pin kit from the 126fan.sk guys and it was the best ever. I did a blow by blow account of my experience on here last year. The replacement bushes were easy to tap in and they were so precise that no reaming was required at all.
If the grease nipple is drilled into the moving axle part of the assembly then that is unheard of in my experience and totaly useless. The locking pin secures the king pin into that section so that there is no movement there and the king pin then turns in the bushes. In normal circumstances with the single nipple set up at the top the grease is pumped in and can get to the outer spiral grooves that run down the outside of the pin and also via a horizontal hole that lines up with the nipple the grease can flow into the central hole that runs the length of the pin. Grease pumped into the centre hole can travel up, is sealed in by the top suspension bush and is then forced back down the outer grooves and bushes. Grease also travels down and is held in by the lower seal or plug (you hope as these are often faulty or have fallen out) then is forced back up the spiral grooves,
Well that's the theory anyway ;D
-
Well went to MOT man today and it is a deff fail so I am going to get in touch with Ricambio again.
Yes Rusty the nipple is on the moving part right next to the locking pin. Mot man said I could try and get a bit of rubber on the locking pin and put a g clamp on to see if it seals it so the grease can go in :-X
Thanks for your help, gonna rebuild the old ones and put extra grease nipple in!

Is play in a Kingpin dangerous as I still drive the car daily?
-
Don't really want to comment on safety, I'm the sort who has risked imminent bearing failure on several cars, but I have only ever lost two rear hubs (one at 70 :o ).
I will say that worn kingpins cause premature wear on bushes and tyres though.
Marc
-
Pumping grease into that section is just a waste of grease. I agree with Marc that the bushes will wear very quickly , tyre wear and your stearing will be affected. Having said that I do not think that you are in any immediate danger. The kingpin is unlikely to fracture and unlike the Morris Minors where the front suspension came apart when the kingpin was ungreased & worn out.
I was very surprised when my 500L which is running a disc brake conversion on 126 stub axles failed the MOT on a kingpin, a couple of years old but not too many miles on the clock and greased often. It was the expensive conversion from a company you may have heard of Ricambio :o
When I fixed it the steering was so much improved :D

There is a pair of stub axles on ebay.

Too much for me when I have already spent £150 on 'new' ones.
-
Just to double check, will these fit the BIS:

Here is my opinion on the subject for what it is worth.
The bushes should be reamed to size once fitted to the uprignt and the pin should be a very firm thumb push through both bushes. If you find the pin pushes through one or other easily and tightens up when you try to push it through both then at least one of the bushes has been reamed at an angle to the other and concequentley wear will occur very quickly thus allowing play to appear. Thus reaming and making sure that the process ensures that both bushes are parallel to each other is vitaly important. The other trick is to get the bottom sealing plug to do just that, seal. I have tried almost everything and have found that braising the plug in place is as good as any. But you have to be quick to do it to prevent heat sink and quick to cool it.

That is great news. Did you get it greased straightaway? If so, did it get into the mechanism as it should? Please let us know how it performs in the next few weeks. Sorry for the questions. I have another Bis which I am restoring. I have yet to test the stub axles for play. The seller could be another useful source of reconditioned stub axles.
I have emailed the seller previously re quality of the stub axles. He does not do it himself, though he can guarantee the work and does have a refund/return policy.
