Title: Bis leaking rocker cover
Post by: ciaoflyer on March 22, 2012, 07:39:15 PM
The rocker cover is leaking oil all over my exhaust, it seems to be coming from the nuts that hold it on what is the best way to seal these?

Mine was doing that, turned out to be the inlet manifold gasket.

What do you mean 'inlet manifold gasket'?

Where the inlet manifold (bit between the bottom of the carb and the block) attaches to the top (right) of the engine, there is a water channel through that. If you take the carb off, it is held on with three (I think) bolts. I had a bit of trouble finding the right replacement gasket, luckily it came off in one piece, so I cleaned up all faces of gasket, block and manifold and very carefully applied red hermetite, seems to be working ok ish.

Until I took the carb off I thought the water was coming off of the bolts on the rocker as well, I was quite confused by it  :$

You jammy person!! Good luck with it, you will need a slim 13mm socket on a short extension, if memory serves right, for the internal manifold bolt ( you will know when you see it). I also found that the two carb bolts and washers toward the drivers side need to be removed and replaced with the carb slightly lifted.

I would also suggest replacing the water pipe that goes to the inlet manifold, and the heat exchange type thing from the exhaust to the drivers side side vent when you are there. I found the water pipe was well done, due to the heat from the exhaust I suppose

If it is not the intake manifold I think I may need these as I don't have them.....

I can't see (please shout me down if I am wrong) how water would be seeping from the rocker cover without some serious problems. I think if that was the case both your oil and water would resemble very cheap and overcooked scotch broth.

A little silicone behind the washers wouldn't go a miss either- I had the same problem...

fitted the fibre washers today and no more oil leaks! ;D ;D  Also I fitted a Dowty washer to the sump plug, a metal washer with a rubber insert, and it is the first time my sump plug has not leaked in 6 years!  Very pleased! ;D ;D ;D
