Title: Fuel tank
Post by: Hazey-n-Marc on March 20, 2012, 06:43:14 PM
About how long does it take to change the fuel tank on a BIS, first time, not after lots of practice? Also how high do you need to get it? Clogging fuel filters in less than 200 miles now :(

You're having a rough time of it at the moment aren't you!!
But I hope you get it sorted.

It is just getting this tank changed, then a bit of bodywork and making (or getting someone else to) a pair of brackets for my roofrack (Hmmmm, slatty). Still good fun :D (pretty sure I got a front wheel in the air cornering earlier, much to the amusement of the driver of the lowered Astra coming the other :P)

one of these, if I don't decide it is too big http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Wooden-Slatted-VW-Beetle-Roof-Rack-/320869509661?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Touring_Travel&hash=item4ab5502a1d#ht_500wt_1287

the fuel tank is easy enough to remove just make sure that you empty it as much as you can before doing so and make sure that the car is raised enough for you to withdraw the tank from underneath the car. make sure you disconnect the filler and breather pipes inside the car (behind the rear passenger doorcard/panel) before you go underneath and make note of the sender wiring connections before pulling them off. the nuts that hold the tank on should come off easy enough i have never had any trouble, make sure you clean the threads up and give them a good lube up before reassembly also while the tanks off get the underseal out and do the now visible underside.
