Ok iam a fiat126 newbie infact i have ONLY had my lovely car 2wks and can no longer get into 2nd or 4th gear :( Anyone shed some light on this problem - am hoping its an easy fix!!! Love my car but not it breaking already. 1st, 3rd and reverse at the moment work

It could just be a loose bolt in the linkage, park it with two wheels on a curb, feel underneath the centre of the car in line with the back of the doors(ish) check the bolt is tight. Ours fell off after slowly becoming harder to change gear. :o

Not sure why that came up twice ???

thanks will see if i can get my husband to look at it - if he cant get to it (he isnt the most mechanically minded person - thats my job but am currently pregnant!) will i be ok driving it to a garage etc?

I assume it is just a nut and bolt, have never seen the original as it is somewhere on the A149. It is reachable without jacking(just). Wouldn't recommend driving if it is loose, unless you can get there without changing gear.

ok thanks x

is it right in the centre?
-
near enough to not know otherwise, maybe a little behind back of doors.
If anyone tells me it is close to the near side (rhd), I will be most dischuffed :D
-
mine is LHD, i can see a bolt pretty much in line with the backdoors in the centre (between the wheels)

That's sounds like the one that fell off of mine. If that is tight I can't really help more. Hope you get it sorted.

Hi Charlie , if the flexible gearbox link is intact then next check that the two gear lever mounting bolts have not slipped. They are located on the other side of of the tunnel from driver's side, yours being left hand drive. Gear lever should be vertical in nuetral. The next and most likely suspect is the bushes that support/guide the gear lever link. If that is the case use the search feature on the forum because this has been covered in minute detail :)

rustys uncle - it is the flexible gearbox link - my local kwikfit ( ::) didnt want to drive too far) is bolting it together so I can get it to my garage and get the link replace - it basically looked as though the metal and plastic has come apart. FX it only being that kwikfit wont charge me and my dad found a replacement part for me. FX FX FX its only that love my car already!!
