Title: Making A Trailer, ideas.
Post by: mckenzie1970 on February 12, 2012, 05:43:17 PM
Hi We are thinking of making a matching trailer to go with the new 126 for camping.
My idea was to buy aluminium sheet or the caravan sheeting type stuff and try and make it look like the rear half of the 126. Hence no cutting up of rare cars and also giving a nice look.
I wonder if anyone has done this and if shaping of the materials are a problem.
I want it to look like the rear of the 126 but using none 126 materials as i dont beleive in cutting them up.
I think theres a better way?
Anyone think this is a viable idea. Summer will soon be here and i would love to take her camping.
Any ideas or pointers welcome
Many Thanks

I know East coast manx can take moulds for glass fibre from an existing panel or vehicle, might be worth a go. http://www.eastcoastbuggies.co.uk/
Ask for Rob Kilham.

It might be worthwhile for him to have the moulds as well, at least for the bonnet and boot lid. If anyone is interested say so on here, it will give him an idea of the market and he might be more accommodating.

I agree. He may find a market for it
I am thinking that we could make it a kind of pop out teardrop trailer but would have to look at size.
Sort of half trailer half pop out tent.
Sleeping off the floor always helps.
Would be very interesting to see what could be done.
Many thanks for your replies

For a small trailer why not buy new rear quarters and a boot lid and use them to skin a frame?

Using a BIS bonnet/boot (delete which ever is inappropriate) with an aircooled back panel would give you the biggest opening (sounds dodgy!).

What I would do is ask... Has anyone got a front end damaged BIS laying about, lose the floor and any thing in front of the A posts,  install perspex windows, flat floor, a frame, and as much canvas as you want. the doors could open 90 degrees+ with expanding canvas compartments allowing you to sleep across where the front seats were, leaving the back as cooker, fridge, cinema etc

For Bis owners this shouldn't be too difficult to put together for the odd night away ;D

are you going to cut out the firewall and then fit a floor right through? then you will have a whole lot more room?

Leaving firewall. Putting a floor in the boot. A plate across the whole front, then a removable top.

Will give storage in the boot.

That looks cool. Yes thats what we want to do, but i thought i may have to wait years to find a car that was dead. Maybe worth a look to try and find one thats been ruined and unrepairable. yours looks ace.
Just what we wanna do.
Thanks every so much for all these replies and ideas posted. Its really informative.
Lets not go down the BBQ Route, lol,  i read through all that lot before registering  :$
I think if i could either find one thats ruined il do the same as our friend above as this looks a great job. I look forward to seeing the finished project.
Kindest Regards
