Title: FUEL RETURN PIPE
Post by: puck304 on February 08, 2012, 08:43:05 PM
Hi, recent problem of the brass pipe for the fuel return on the carb keeps popping out, petrol everywhere! Anyone got any ideas? Pipe doesn't screw in, just pushes in & out.  :(

Bis or aircooled?

If aircooled I can post you a spare carb, you could then raid one for parts.

Hi, thanks for your offer, it is aircooled. But the carb is only a couple of years old! Do you know if there's any way of sticking the pipe back on? Is it common for the pipe to pop out? I might have an old carb in the garage.

Some sort of glue should sort it, don't know if there is enough heat at that point in an aircooled for hermatite to work.

Solder? Might not work on alloy and might not like the vibration, just a random thought.

I didn't think there was a fuel return pipe on the carb, just a feed.  There is a return on the pump.  This is BIS language of course, air cooled might be different.

Still doesn't make any difference, if it is falling out you might be able to secure it using one of the Loctite products - similar to threadlock but there are some stronger grades.

I would then suggest a secondary method of stopping it falling out if the loctite doesn't hold it though.  These brass fittings falling out of carbs was a major reason for Reliant scimitarts catching fire, so what people do is use either locking wire or (in my case) cable ties that go round the pipe and jubilee clip and then stretch round some part of the carb, in order to make sure the whole thing is always being pulled into the carb body.

Might try the Loctite, and maybe the cable tie too, thanks for your help! :)

You can fit a hose union like this one (even stick it with thread glue) . Also to replace the others if you don't trust them anymore.

Thanks, but I don't think mine has a thread on it. Wouldn't this knacker the hole?

;D No thread for sure, but you can use a thread cutter ;) And it will last foreverrrrrrr 8)

i had this happen to me recently and caused me to worry a little as its a sure way to setting light to the car and neighbourhood if not spotted straight away i pushed it home as far as it would go and mixed up a little liquid steel and used that to stick the pipe to the carb.

Managed to take a pipe from an old carb, bit too big for current carb, so ground it a bit and wanged it in with a hammer! Job's a good'un! ;)

I would have used some liquid steel too.

I tapped mine, remember to use a lot of grease to keep the swarf out.  The body is material is soft so go gently. Mine has lasted for 4 years with no problems.
