with ref to the stub axles, will these really not fit a BIS?

They are not suitable for the later 126s or the Bis for two reasons , actual axle diameter is smaller to take smaller wheel bearings and there are only two brake backing plate mounting points as opposed to the three you need. Have you still got your old ones to recon. I guess that as it was just an advisory on the MOT you have plenty of time to sort it out.
