okay after talking about it for ages.. I am going to embark on a rebuild on the little one... When I changed the sump over there was noticeable aluminum shavings in the oil and significant play in the big end bearings...
My question is what are the bits i must replace (eg piston rings ,gaskets etc ) to ensure a healthy engine and what should i replace (valves, cam) if budget permits
-
Well, everything that is worn...
If it's pulled apart then it's best to measure everything. Usually the camshaft and crankshaft don't wear away as quickly as say the cylinders, piston rings, bearings (depends on usage of course) but it's good to have a service manual as that contains all the measurements.
Another thing to do is to change all the seals/gaskets (whether they're good or not, usually are worn by the time the engine needs a rebuild). Cylinder head gasket is compulsary to change if the cylinder head is removed.
To check the condition of the cylinder head the valves have to be taken out.
-
thanks mate ,.. I have the gasket kits already and given the amount of leaks I would say that most are shagged
-
well the engine is now in bits on the garage floor was a lot easier than i thought.. here is some pictures . interested in what you guys can tell or see by them

still ordering bits and pieces for the rebuild..
questions
Can I buy these

Instead of these

Clearly a lot cheaper and easier to post

Simple answer is no. 1st item is big ends , 2nd item is main bearings. If you do not know the difference you might want to bone up on it before you start your rebuild :D
-
way too late for boning up... :o ;D the engine is in bits .... By big ends do you mean what are also called con rod bearing shells ?
-
Mine had exactly the same play in the rods even after brand new bearings.
Get everything cleaned and all new gaskets/bearings will be a great start , check out my thread on my engine rebuild if you have any queestions.
Im no mechanic and managed to do mine fine with no leaks and it even runs !
-
Service manuals also have good diagrams in case you forget which piece went where...
-
well just hit send on paypal for my order of new bits and pieces for engine and gearbox... should be in oz from slovkia in about 2 weeks and then the fun begins.. in the meantime i am going to get the rocker cover and cooling cowling powder coated (red i am thinking) and paint the engine bay and bumpers (black)...

updated photos...
Still a little while to go.. Waiting on Transmission

Ok almost back together,,, but have a few questions ...
1. Is there a way to fill the gearbox with oil apart from the plug as I cant get it off ?
2. there is a senor (?) on the gearbox that has electrical terminals.. I cant find what wire should be connected to it any ideas ?
Thanks
-
is it the reversing light? Off hand I think it is blue and white cable :-
-
1. Remove the lid - 4 bolts - of the gearbox and add oil that way
2. The only electrical wiring for the gearbox is the two plug reverse light switch. The wiring should have two connections on it and from what i have seen it comes from the loom in the engine bay so it will be heading back towards the front of the car from the engine bay (hope that makes sense)
-
Cool thanks makes sense !!,,
Thanks until my next question !!
-
Okay everything back together ! BUT I know have a consistent vibration with the engine is reved... Almost like a rumble.
My second problem is that the engine seems to be sitting low..I cant get the lower guard on without it hitting the alternator belt and the engine is very close the engine spring mounting ? any ideas ?
-
Loosen off the gearbox rubber mounts and use a jack to lift it then retighten. That should cure the belt hitting.
The vibration could be caused by the bash plate that connects to the g/b mount hitting/rubbing on the gearbox. You'll be able to see if it is.
Lifting the position of the g/b mounts, come to think of it may cure both problems
-
Cheers mate, had a go at what you u suggested.. seem to help.. is there only supposed to be two rubber mounts on the GB ? eg one either side .. Anything supposed to be on the middle of the underside of the bracket.. Still feels like the engine is free to move like it did ...
How tight should the mounting spring be ?
Still rumbling !!
-
Yep, only two rubber mounts for the box. They mount on the side of the crossmember at approx a 45 degree angle and the bash plate bolts up to the crossmember at the bottom, no other mounts or rubbers. I've never removed the mounting spring as i've never had to take the engine out - gearboxes are a different story and to take them out i ususally remove the whole assembly, rear panel with mounting spring included - but i think the manual says what torque the spring should be.
Did the height adjustment cure the belt hitting? If it did and you still have rumbling try removing the bash plate entirely and take it for a test drive. I had rumbling in a niki once and that seemed to have cured it.
The only other thing i can think of is the mounting of the rear panel. I have seen different sized spacers between the panel and i have seen people assemble the rear panel with no spacers. The one with no spacers started making rumbling noises right on start up and was shut down straight away. I think the right amount of space is when the rear panel sits flush with the rear quarter leaving the bootlid sitting a little proud at the bottom (i think).
Those are things that i can think of that would make a rumble but as mentioned i've never taken the spring assy off so maybe check that thats all in good order before you start ripping bits off 8)

thanks again I will give it a tray (removing the bash plate).. Its about 100c here today so I will wait until this evening !
-
nah its still there !! I am starting to think its something more sinister
-
regretting tackling this myself. Cant work out what the problem is.. once I have some spare cash I will take it down to the pros to sort out and get back on the road

Hi Skelz,
I've had the same problem as you. I took my engine out to replace the clutch assembly and do some work in the gearbox. Upon re installing the engine I noticed a rumbling vibration exactly as you have described. The car drives fine but it's just a damn nuisance to me as the drive is no longer very pleasant..
I may try adding spacers to the rear cross member as well as removing the bash plate and adjusting the height of things.. will let you know if I find anything out!

Pull the carpet up in front of the rear seats might have to under a seat belt clip bolt to gain proper access then Have a look under the rear plate of the tunnel where the gear stick rod goes througth the bulkhead there should be a rubber grommit with little metal pieces on it when this is missing you will get similar noise, you might be able to see it from the underside.

thanks guys.. I have lost a bit of interest to be honest... but this has inspired me to have another look

I'm certain that mine has worked its way out. Looking under the car you can actually see it hanging off the switch rod. Sounds like some good advice to me :)

Okay... Update... embarrassingly.. I worked out that I had the engine mount swing all ass about.. now its all good.. off to the mechanics tomorrow to get the engine tuned and timed and I am BACK BABY
