Hi and welcome to the club forum!
Nice to see an aircooled motor, most of the ones being bought nowadays are the watercooled bis models!
What's the problem with the engine?
C
:)
-
eh? thats a BIS!
-
This car has been bought a month ago by previous owner ... who apparently had problems with head of the engine ("culasse" in french) and air valves ("soupape" in french) ...
Here is the engine :

missed the bis bit!
-
just noticed your user name... you got a vespa then?
-
you have one dont you Barry?
I was going to give you a ring in the next week or so for a chat, Barry i dont know if you know already, but ther is a micromaniacs valentines run on the 12th of feb in Goole, its a big distance 200 miles for me, but will be worth it. a few of us are going from the club. The april meet is approaching quickly, so will see you then otherwise!
when you say you bought the car with apparent head problems, the usual problem would be head gasket had blown due to over heating. Replace the head gasket, get a new thermostat and make sure you have plenty of corrosion inhibitor!

Chris

Yes ... got 3 Vespa PX (from 125cm3, 200 and 210cm3 Malossi) ... plus a Vespa Rally 200 ... I'm not a mod but a scooterist, who used to ride to scooter rallies in UK, from Isle of Wight to Mersea Island !
Here is my Vespa PX200cm3...

I just get the keys of the car this weekend ... from the owner, the problem is from the head engine, caused by unleaded petrol 98 or 95 used without additives ... any infos to help me ? I started to start it today, the engine seems alive but not started ...
-
that cant be so, we all run our BIS's on unleaded petrol, the BIS is well known for running on unleaded, and the engine is tough enough. I'll bet my bottom dollar though that it is a head gasket problem! The valves are strong enough to take it, mine has only ever been run on unleaded!
Do you have a manual for the car?(free BIS CD WSM with membership)
i hope this helps!
Lovely Vespa!!!!

Chris

I know the Bis model goes on unleaded with no problems.
So it’s probably the common Bis problem of blowing head gaskets! Other members will probably advise more of the problem…

Hi Chris,
from the pix here under, you'll see some oil around ... the owner told me the last time the engine run, some oil was going out from the head ...
 thanks for the Vespa !
-
yep that sounds like the head gasket alright!! get the cylinder head changed and get a new gasket on, others will confirm whether im correct or not, but it could also be that the cylinder isnt on tight enough, but i would replace head gasket soon!!! Have you checked the oil? does the oil have a white milk (water) in it? also check the filler cap, for this white milky oil. . The creamy white oil, shows that the water and oil is mixing.
While you do the head gasket you need to replace the coolent thermostat as this is the fatal flaw of the BIS.

...The creamy white oil, shows that the water and oil is mixing...
ok Chris, I'll check if I see some of this Capuccino mixture in it ... thanks !
-
nice one!
i dont think you will see the cappaccino, because sounds like gasket hasnt blown around the water jacket hole.
make sure you get it sorted, dont drive around with it like it is, (will only make it worse) and make sure you get the head skimmed!!

Chris
-
:???: well I still haven't solved my problem of head gasket ...
-
hi again!
i am confused to why youre confused? what problem havnt you soved? the only problem is getting the head gasket done?

Chris
-
 yes but it seems all Fiat dealers around where I lived do not want to work on my 126 ...
-
im sorry to hear that, we have the same problem over here. Would you attempt to do it yourself? we would guide you all the way!
its not all that difficult, if you ahve a little bit of mechanical knowlegde, its really just taking a few bolts off.
anyway keep us informed
:) regards
Chris

 I'm used to "mecanic" on Vespa in my shed or on the road while ridding to scooter rallies ... have a few tools also ... If you can feature here some photos (or tell me where to find a DIY) it will help ... thanks in advance !
-
 My 126BIS has just started this morning ! Excellentissimo !!!
:smt028 The battery was not enought charged ... I've driven it 5 minutes round the house, it's like riding my Vespa without helmet !!
I need now to bring it to my nearest fiat dealer to check this possible head gasket problem ...
-
 the small Fiat agent phoned me and my 126 BIS seems to have no problems with the head engine gasket ... the only problems is the light for cooling liquid on the dashboard that stays red ... a possible problem with the connection on the engine, and also why the fan doesn't work ...
... more news in 2 days ...
-
here is our 126 ... the most Brit 126 Bis in France ... you'll ever see !
just spot the flag on the back ! :smt066

Modded the engine and she does 41mph! However she is under resto at the mo. It,s a 1972 Vespa Ciao Super Comfort (means it has a sprung seat). Also it's how I got my user name!

i dont know about the lights but i would sort that tracking out you crazy frenchman! you could drive in two different directions at once with those front wheels!!
-
oh yeah mick... that is strange... or in a mecanical term ''fu***d''
-
No problem with the front wheels & direction ... she passed with success
the "controle technique" (equivalent to the english MOT) ...
they check all security parts (brakes, wheels, suspensions, security belts,
lights, etc ...)
