Hi all my names Ron and ive been considering buying a fiat 126 for some months now, i keep looking on ebay and the polish eqivalent Motoallegro, where theres usually over 200 for sale at any one time im particually interested in the ELX models as they have the better spec ( head rests + tilt rear windows), any body got any other tips on what to look for, i would consider driving one back as this is the cheapest option, any one else interested in a trip to PL and drive back in a convoy ?
i can speak polish and my reading isnt to bad so no problems there
P.S will it be just the cost of re-registering the fiat onto english plates once home or are there any other costs involved ? + for insurance purposes from what age of car is it regarded as a classic? will a 1999-2000 model year fiat 126 be regarded as a classic
thanks in advance

Hi Ron,
Welcome to the forum, hope you soon find a car, ..does seem a lot of hassle though going all the way to poland and the expense of finding a car, getting it back, testing, registering etc. I shouldn't imagine a 99 would be considered a classic, quite a few going on ebay here these days..depends on your budget of course..
Keep us posted!

Oi! Greenfly, my 1999 is my Polish 'classic'! :P ;)
-
Read the old posts on the site about registration. if it is a 2000 it is very very tough, also 90s cars are very thin metal, came from Belarus as opposed to polish steel. they rot very very fast. (floors, inner wings even seen roofs)
If you speak Polish then I really can't see a problem finding a decent car, many many polish 126 sites with some very good cheap cars about. If not, Allegro is always good.
I am sure you know a Polish MOT means nothing at all, just a bit of paper. the car will have Polish insurance so you will be covered to drive it back here, trying to change registration at local 'UrzÄ…d Miasta' can be a pain if you are not 'zameldowanie'. somewhere in PL.
Tryng to cross the border on a UK passport in a Polish car was not a problem though, just make sure the car is not nicked, they will check on the border ;)

Sound advice dajwid! ;)

Just checked my classic car insurance and it says " Vehicles over 20 years old and less than £15,000 in Value" based on the owner's declaratiion, no external valuation required . I am not greedy , I just went for £14,500 and they can keep the change ;D
Anybody want to come to my Bar-B-que , I probably will not bother to cut the shell into a trailor & a cosy couch . Just tip the charcoal through the sunroof and enjoy ;)

Thanks all for input i will be in Poland end of August for 4 days but thats to a village wedding where the alcohol is based on 2 bottle of vodka per person per day and the wedding is a 3 day event,
Ive got family / friends in Lodz/ Warsaw/ Pulawy and Krakow so its just the cost of a flight, alternatively i may consider buying a trailer dolly and driving over later in the year and searching allegro whilst over there
Dajwid what do u meam when u say that the " 2000 it is very very tough" do u mean the steel is better ? or would u recommend buying a pre 1990 fiat
Ive also emailed a guy in Poland that does engine swaps (www.budowa swopow.com) as im interested in doin this type of engine change myself and wanted to know his address as id be interested in buying the modified engine rear mount and engine to gearbox adaptor plate but as yet hes not replying to me, maybe ill get one of my Polish friends with Polish email address to contact him
thanks again

2000 car needs a different cat fitted, go for a 1999 or older :-)
Swapz, very tough to register in the UK unless you want it for track use only.
-
dajwid mines got that cat also, 1999 model!
-
Nobody told me the 90's models were made of thin steel!! I've just bought a 1992 Bis????????!!!!! :o
-
Get in there boy ! ;D
-
You will be fine. I have two 1990 126 Bis! I can't imagine the sheet metal of 126s built in the 1990's to be thinner than the earlier versions. Or do they mean the sheet metal being thinner from 1993 onwards?

Ronb1967,
Please read this thread. It sort explains what Dajwid is talking about.

Thanks for the usefull link
I will ask a friend of mine who owns a Bosch service centre (Car Garage) if he can obtain any literature regarding imported fiats and the relevent MOT emmisions tests.
Daywid you mention that swaps is difficult to register in uk, id register the car as a standard 650cc first then eventually carry out a conversion at a later date, can't see it being a problem as theres loads of cars on uk roads with Non standard engines, mk1/2 road legal escorts with 1800/2000cc zetec engines as an example
Unless anyone on here has tried and failed to carry out an engine mod on a 126 id like to hear about it
this is an email i received back after id asked the question about replacing the 650cc engine with an 1108cc engine (dated 14/04/2011)
Thank you for your email to TTS Enquiries about vehicle engine change.
Also once the modification has been made you must satisfy yourself that the vehicle still meets the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations. In particular you would need to ensure that the brakes are sufficient to cope with the increased power and that the tyres have the correct load and speed ratings. If it is not classed as a radically altered vehicle then these items will not be tested but you can voluntarily pay for an individual vehicle approval to satisfy yourself that the vehicle is compliant.
Please see directgov link for a radically altered vehicle.
