i started thinking i might as well spruce up the car while i was doing some bodywork repairs and its now becoming a bit more than i intended as i might as well just strip clean and rebuild the bloody lot.

That is all very well but were any cute little furry animals hurt in the refurbishment of this car  >:(
I believe that the interior was the last known habitat of the almost extict Wooly Beanie Hat-O-Pus  ;D

got the engine back in tonight will fill it up with liquids tomorrow and give it it a go i hope all is well as i have got to get an mot sorted rapido!

took my car to a "classic friendly" garage i must have caught them on an off day! failed the mot dismally fail sheet is a joke. i will endevour this week to try and get it through but dont have my hopes up at the moment! does anyone have a spare left hand drive steering box going spare? if yes then pm me cheers.

been working on the car today and consulted vosa mot regulations and find that non rack and pinion type steering can have upto 75mm free play on the steering wheel before failure, i have around 15mm and they failed me i shall present them with printouts should they try again. they also stated that my steering felt hard to turn this reason being is that i have been led to believe that the worm and sector should have no play thus making the gaers mesh too tight and making it feel so tight. so all 126 owners with the worm and sector type steering take note and do not be failed for no valid reason.

i have had it completely off the car cleaned it all reset it and refitted it however i was still getting around half to an inch of free play which i was told was a fail that is until i consulted vosa and found out its up to three inches of free play allowed! i  have found if you adjust the eccentric bush around the pitman shaft then too tightly then it makes the steering feel too hard and this is what the tester was also concerned about. all in all bad advice from the test centre.

mic you are correct and you are allowed 75mm play on steering boxes.  But if the box is adjusted to tight you may get a fail under section 2.2D. Excessive tightness or roughness in the steering mechanism.

yeah that was my beef as the tester was telling me to tighten the box to eliminate play in the steering wheel but could not grasp that the steering would get tighter if i did so.
the good news is i took it to another garage today and they understood the system and i adjusted it with the tester present and he okay d the setting.
i did however fail on brake balance but after i re bled the front calipers they passed so i now have mot and no worries on that front for about a year....
