Title: EXHAUST ELBOW restoration
Post by: Rusty's Uncle on September 17, 2009, 06:29:48 PM
It is very difficult to keep the little cast iron exhaust elbows looking good & protected from corrosion. Has anybody had any joy with this ? Stuff like the heat resistent paint from Halfords does not last. I have been looking at high temp Stove Paint but not sure  :-

Have you tried VHT paint (Very High Temperature) this is supposed to be made for manifolds etc

Wait ... you've not been to the machine shop to see if you can have them remade in some super fancy high temp alloy? You, Sir, are slipping!

thats the problem with that paint it does smoke initially i wonder if its some sort of curing process? the only other thing i can think of is going mental and rubbing smooth and polishing then cleaning at regular intervals (like three times a day...lol)

did you try with anticorrosive liquid taht can be bought in gas stations or something like that. you put part in that liquid and after that use very high temperature color

Not been to a machine shop but I did get a quote to have some vitreous enameled but it would have been about £25 to £30 apiece  :(
Hope to get something with a gloss finish so it looks & stays clean  [-/

Hi Rusty,

I used a product called "nicoshine" on my polished alloy parts on my V8s. I treated my inlet manifold, rocker covers and heads in 2004 and havent had to touch them since. It stops polished alloy parts fading and getting that milky looking finish, so you dont have to clean them 3 times a day. Its pretty expensive though.

What did Jaguar use on the exhausts fitted to the older XK engines. As I recall it was shiny black.

Rusty, I thought you were going to get one of those fancy exhausts that bolt strait into the head, made out of stainless  [-/

Been to an oldtimer meet today and had a chat with a guy about the exhaust manifolds, he has a company that treats the manifolds with ceramic coating, they do this to reduce the temp around the engine, it would give some 33% less heat under the bonnet of a standard 4 cyl. The best thing is that it gives a really nice finish in some 14 colors. I asked about pricing and he showed me a small 4cyl manifold for which the cost would be 250 euro. So I guess for our little elbows it would be less. They also do self-adhesive alu patches coated with ceramic material for heat deflection.
