Title: Air-cooled 650 head

Hi, I'm after a 650 head with/without rocking gear and rocker cover. Mine is hanging-in there but feel it's life span is going to be limited :oops:

The head has to be in very poor condition for it not to be fixable. I am literally in the middle of just fixing a 500 head and an interesting modified & ported 126 head . Typing with dirty fingers  ;)

It has strripped the threads out of the studs that hold the rocker shaft on.

Trouble is she's now our only car so cannot afford to muck-about too much with it.

Easy helicoil job , One of the first things I invested in when I got my latest car was M6 , M8 & M10 & Spark plug (M14) sets, shame you do not live closer. You need M8s for those studs  [-/

I fear I may have gone backwards, I drilled the rocer shaft bits to 10.2mm then drilled and tapped the head to M10, it now has M10 studs.. :oops:

Oh you boys , what are you like ? Anyway if the rest of the head is OK then you should be OK for a while. Also if you have tapped the head with the finer M10 x 1.25 thread then you can still fit M8 inserts straight in. I guess that you have also drilled your rocker box cover as well.

M8 Helicoil is drilled 8,3mm. With M10x1,5 in the head Darrell can't use M8 inserts.

Hi Andi , notice the word "finer" in my post & hence the "M10 x 1.25" . Come on you guys were bought up on Metric , I had to convert from feet , inches , rods , poles & perches  ::)

So far you are right. The rise would be the same as the M8. But: I don't think he used a 1.25 , as even on the metric continent of bliss you have to make a daily travel to find a 10x1,25... [-/

why not fit helicoil into helicoil to close up the hole and loctite it? it may sound a bit iffy but is it worth a try?

Definitly not! Helicoil is only a wire, an in-in-solution wouldn't do it anyway. There's another repairkit from Würth, called "time-sert". This has the same thread as Helicoil, but is a more or less solid tube instead of a wire. Ok, my english gets weak...Now, watch this:

With this Darrell could have saved his 10x1,5 to M8, because it has another system of fixing. But the set is very expensive, and you have to work exactly.

 [-/Well spotted on that one & that is a good bit of kit as whilst a well fitted helicoil is good for most applications the top rally / racing engineers use what I have always known as Keenserts , I guess those are a crib but if they are half as good then it is a good buy  :)

thats bloody well cheap its around twenty odd plus quid for just a helicoil set with no drill bit. i only said helicoil in helicoil as a sort of question as i have done it in the past to get my old production line back up and running merely a stop gap so to speak..i like the look of these sleeves indeed.
