Title: Importing fiat in August.
Post by: maluch_PKD on April 30, 2009, 11:41:21 PM
Hi Everyone

I am driving from Poland and need some advice regarding importing this into the UK and what I need to do when I get it here in relation to registering this. It was made in 2000 and at the moment it has Polish insurance and it taxed and tested.

Please can someone help

Contact me on [email protected]

Thanks in advance

Paul

You will need to have it MOT-ed first in UK and have it insured. Need to fill out the import pack from DVLA. If you have the Polish log book this would speed up the process, if not you need a letter from the manufacture to confirm the year it was made. Than you have to send all the paper work of to DVLA with a check for about £50,-.
This is what we had to do with ours, but the cars were older.
Only thing I`m not sure about is, that your car wouldn`t be older then 10 years, so you might have to pay import TAX, and have it SVA tested(not sure if it`s still called the same)
The best way is to contact DVLA. They are very helpful.
 Good luck!

The massive problem will be insurance, trying to get it covered to drive it back. The polish insurance covers you for 14days after the car is sold (In Poland the car, not the person is insured), unless the seller is leaving the cover on the car and allowing you on his policy, (I know its a strange system), next problem will be a green card, you will be asked to show at the Polish/German border. You or the policy holder will need to get one from the insurers.

If it is a 2000 car I hope you checked for rust (under the arches), the newer cars really have a problem with the 'tin worm',

The fact it has a Polish MOT means nothing, I used to get mine without even going to the centre ;D, only cost me £15. There is no car tax in Poland.

Just one last thing is the car a Happy End?

When we crossed the German border, we had our Polish relatives drive it over just to simplify things!

Thanks for the information.

The car has insurance until the end of August as a friend has put in their name for the moment.
I am not the registered owner at the moment. Will this matter? Thanks again
