Title: Hello! 126 BIS Newbie (Nearly...)
Post by: cudhso on March 23, 2009, 07:12:42 PM
Hi,

Buying a 126 hopefully at the end of March, I just hope all is going to go well.

Here is the deal.

I work in Iraq as a contractor.  I arrive home at the end of March and hopefully will have won an E Reg (1988) 126 BIS on EBAY, taking a chance on the description that it is in good condition and a good runner. We fly into Oxfordshire which it just so happens is where the fiat is for sale.  I have to get a taxi just over 40 miles to Didcot, buy the 126, road fund it and drive home to Penzance.  Should be a hoot.

I am officially buying the car for Mandy, my wife, but a large part of me wants to have something mechanical to tinker with and improve.  My wife will not drive our estate car because she doesn't like the idea of parking it.  The 126 should be just the tihing!

Anyway, hope to be logging on, and once the car is tarted up a little, maybe posting a photo or two.

Cheers,

Richie

A stinking Civvie contractor I am afraid.

Never mind, I get twice their leave so it is not all bad.

well at least you wont have to armour up your 126 to go to work! i hear the iraqi,s have got into modding their cars in the old 70s/80s style with loads of fake fur etc? can you get any pics of such cool styling?

Wow!  You mean to say there are people other than our locals who could consider the furry dash cool?  It just never crossed my mind that kind of person existed.

I bought a Fiat 900 amigo some years ago which had been done out in purple deep pile.  All over the dash, the inner panels etc.  Took me ages to get the glue off, had to use MEK in the end.

I shall see what I can do about the pics.

Cheers,  Richie

methel ethel ketone now theres a blast from the past we used to soak cotton wool with it and drop it on to our managers cars then they banned the stuff but the good old chemical manufacturers then came up with hard ink remover which not only removed paint but sucked your lungs of air and gave a wicked poppers like buzz.
with reference to the iraqi mods i think it would be good to see whats hot over there , as for your old motor perhaps you should open a moding shop as you are so experienced in the floor to ceiling shagpile look .

OK, I have got it home.

It loves cruising at 55, but is seriously noisy over that.  Seems there are a few sympathetic resonances to combat, I have had success in the amigo years ago, but this wil be a little more difficult I think.

One of the resonances seems to be coming from the tunnel, is there a grommit or something which should stop the gear linkages from touching the tunnel?

Cheers-me-dears,

Richie

[-/ Hi Richie , good luck with the new car . There is a hard plastic bush at the back of the gear lever housing, it sounds like that may have gone, not too hard a job though  :)

Hi Richie. As Rusty already said it sounds like the gear linkage bush. I had the same problem on my air cooled, but it wasn`t selecting gears at all. There is also one in the front. I haven`t had either of them left. I`m assuming they just disintegrate from the heat. You can buy them from eBay. Here is a pic of how it looks like.
Good luck, and keep us updated.

Thanks for the gromet info, I shall get it into the dealers and get the job done the same time as I have the exhaust repaced.

My wife loves the 126, which is a relief. It was always going to go one way or the other, I am glad it has gone the way it has. You dont 'sort of like' a 126, after all.

Cheers all,

Richie

Hi,

Sussed the vibration problem, the exhaust colector is only supported by one (should be four) bolts!

I think the engine mounts could do with replacing as well. Can this be done by suporting the engine and replacing each mount in turn or does the engine need to come out?

Cheers, Richie
