these cars are rarer than Fiat 500s now!
 Last one produced!
 Cost nothing to run
 Ideal winter project!

:D I wonder what the floor looks like

in the second pic there is no rust, thats an armhole, so youcan tell other road users to Fu*k Off!

(only avalible on some aircooled models)

OK! lets go for it!!

The main problem with pooty aircooled's is that theres no little boot in witch to put your shoe box in.. i mean? where do you keep your shoes??

Hmm... lets see, a cold morning, you sit in your bed, youve installed an remote engine starter on your BIS, just push the button, you hear a quiet yet lovely sound outside, you get ready for work, sit in the car and push that little thingy on the centre console and the little front rad is hot in a few secs, you push down the choke (which you left up the night before :P ) and youre on your way, during the drive a little rain is falling, so you turn on your intermittent wipers and spray some washing liquid via an electric motor.... youre at work... youre going home and decide to stop for shopping.. no probs... you open the front trunk... 55l capacity is not nearly enough for the stuff.. you open the back trunk 110 l more is ok but can t fit that new LCD tv you bought for your bathroom ( :P again) so you flip down the seats and got 550 l cargo space (same as the new Å koda octavia  :D ) and its all in... you happily puff home, ofcourse its night already, so your h4 lights shine as brightly as the sun, and those huge speakers in the back shelf hum a happy tune... so is the life of a bis owner, so what if you have to spend a month per year under the car... you enjoy getting your hands dirty... :D ...

... its morning again, a few days ago you sold your bis and bought an early air cooled, becouse these were ever so manly and rare, and classic... you couldnt install the remote control start cos the system cant pull that starter lever, you get out of the house, freezing, start the car, go back in to get ready, you left the choke up so its DAMN NOISY outside, youve voken up the neighbourhood, you get into the car and set off to work, open that simple flap in the floor to let in the pleasures of heated oil fumes combined with the exhaust (what joy), the tiny 599cc engine is givin everything its got but its just too damn slow, its raining again but your wipers either work too fast or not at all, you try to squirt some liquid on the windshield but the button is broken and you get the liquid on the new carpets (the old ones were soo damn old you had to replace em)... youre at work... going home... all your collegues wonder why the engine is soo loud and if its broken... going for the shopping... 55l in the front- a few yoghurts... flip the back seats and fit 2 six packs in... but where do we put a plasma tv for the bedroom??? the roof why not... so youre rumbling home... its dark outside and the bilux lights can barely keep you on the road, your old 12" wheels are damn slippery so you go slower than slow, no way to hear the stereo speaker in the glove compartment... youve gotten home, the engine is damn near melting point cos the thermostat flap didnt opet (youve removed the bis thermostat :P ).. your plasma is dead from the rain and short circuits, the six pack explodes from the shaking... a disaster... then, you wish you had that BISSY back... but the current owner blew the headgasket and had her scrapped... so youre stuck with a useless classic...

p.s. the author loves all 126es, be they air cooled or water cooled, but is sure the watercooleds are better  :D :D  :P

p.p.s. im really bored...  >:( :D

BIS are ok... but air cooled rocks [-/

Due to a lack of interest in my BIS I was trying to sell I figured I'd re-cycle the bits into my air cooled so I now have intermittent  wipers.
I have a Solenoid starter  [-/ for the remote staring  8)
found some xenon bulbs to hopefully make a few eyes bleed. Dunno but lights seem so much brighter in a baby fiat!
Sports exhausts easily available for air cooled, give such a pleasant rumble on those cold morning  :P
Wasted coil fitted to the air cooled from the BIS, no more classic air cooled 'missing'
I am proving air cooled need not be so noisy as a little time spent can eliminate most mechanical noises.

I am damn sure that my BIS was not as effective up hills as the air cooled...
Somehow the air cooled will do 65 up hills the BIS didnt manage 60.. ;)
Maybe my memory has faded...

Can't say I miss having to go collect cr*p for the house.. :D
I had the TV delivered as it was too big to fit in the passat estate  ;D

LOL

sorry am also a bit bored.

to be honest there are plusses and minusses for both.
I just wish I could afford to run both of them :(

I agree completely...  ;)

oh, how in the world can a aircooled be faster than the bis? if you had the older 599cc engine im sure the difference was enormous and even the later 650, and the last 650 el engine (199 something till 2000 ) which was the strongest aircooled had 1 hp less than the BISmarck  :D

hey i thought xenon kits were illegal in the EU, something about the car having lenses, automatic beam regulation and pressurized washers... not really sure since were not in the EU and can install pretty much anything on our cars and get thru a m.o.t.  :D :P

aircooled....well proven engine that was actually designed properly and up rated thro its looooooong production run..the end 652cc was producing sum 23+ bhp compared with the original 500 engind making sum 16bhp.....the whole car is based on the ultra reliable and PROVEN 500 R

bis, stop gap car before the cinq was availible, poorly designed engine cooling and head bolt pattern.....the buying public payed dearly for the short comings of this engine......the engine can barely survive in standard form...no room for tuning on this steam engine.....all the worst bits of 126 ownership with none of the good bits.....the most reliable things about bis's are the head gasket failiure and exhaust falling off....... they would have better going down the Giardinera route with the under floor mounted aircooled.........

bottom line is wether you bis guys like it or not, its not a reliable car....if your that bothered about load space....well, by a cinq.....

ive owned both...and several 500's.........so speak from experience.....sorry guys, its the facts.....

hey no 1 said the bis was reliable, but with a couple of my-hands-are-greasy days, they can be good runners. my engine for example never gave me trouble, not ever... well untill now, but its my fault for messing about with it... :(
main problem i think (of all 126es) was the crappy gearbox of which i needed to replace 2!! (one bis and 1 aircooled)
this, for now is my experience and opinion...
Title: Re: Our little fiats DO NOT RUST : P
Post by: 126dave on December 30, 2008, 04:14:00 PM
i beg to differ on the gearbox, its not crappy at all.....its that modern drivers dont know how to use it,its basicly 1950's designed, and boxes aint like that anymore.... how many times do you see on forums peeps moaning about the crunch as they smash into first coming to a halt?...i would also hazzard a guess that all 'boxes in used 126's have been abused before we get them..............i would agree that they should not have added syncro to the top three gears tho....it was stronger as a full crash box.....also i might add....most people use the wrong oil in them as well...........(should be 20/50)

dont get me wrong Gordon, i do like the Bis, the concept was great, its just the Lancia engine was not fully developed before production...........shame really...its a torquey little thing when its running on petrol and air and not water and air.... ;D

yes i see what you mean concerning the first gear, the 2nd box i bought had a really bad 1st gear, but my original one was perfect, yet it shook like mad when starting in 1st, ended up to be a loose screw, seems to me that the pole which made it wasnt all that sober :D

ha ha but you didnt mention grinding to a halt at the roadside, all your frozen shopping defrosting , having to leave the car because theres no mobile phone coverage and on returning found that your rear tailgate has been opened and your new tv has gone awol, then some git has also gone and stole your wheels for his off road donkey cart! but then again you can sit and listen to your radio....oops they took that as well then the recovery turn up and charge you a mint to get home, thats real comfort. Don't ask me how it is true but on a long uphill the air cooled does better than the BIS did.
The BIS was faster...blimey alot faster! The Air cooled will only be happy at about 60..maybe that is just a confidence thing but the BIS would happily sit at 80mph.

What attracted me to the air cooled was the ability to upgrade stuff which is not available for the BIS which is a pity.

Although the BIS was said to be unreliable, I found mine to be very reliable. But then I had taken the thermostat out and thrown it away. I then filled it with 100% coolant, to hell with what they say about 50% being more effective. I figured I'd rather go 100% so as to make sure there is no corrosion inside the engine.

Part of the problems with BISes I think were previous owners and they were expected to perform like modern vehicles.

I mean a modern vehicle..most people seem to only service the car if it fails the emissions test at MOT!

A BIS needs a little more tlc I think you will agree.

I was at a garage the other day, a young mechanic stared into the engine in amazement. He couldn't comprehend the concept of the engine nor could he work out the layout. I pointed out the spark plugs but because he couldnt see them, I think he still didnt get it. When I mentioned points he looked equally lost!

My first fiat ever and first car was a fiat 500 giardinera. Brilliant little car with an amazingly long sunroof. When you fill it with young 20 year olds you can imagine, bikinis ect were in order ;D

However I was young, impatient, inexperienced, could have done with a self healing car really but my exhaust kept falling off, the sump fell off on one occasion leaving a trail of oil. The fan cowling rattled itself to bits....it had it's issues.

Mainly due to me.

for the record i had 92 mph out of my bis 13 way faster than my aircoolers but it was so unreliable and ran the risk of blowing the gasket everytime i ragged it. my aircoolers are far more reliable however they are so spartan my polski has two seats and thats the interior done! my fsm is about as comfortable as they got having electric ignition and a rear heated windscreen! all in all the are very different but the same fun only you tend to have more fun fixing a bis... happy new year to all of you 126ers

Yes, there are hardly any performance upgrades for the bis, only sports exhausts ive seen were home built...

as for that aircooled uphill speeding, i think it has a different gear ratio than the bis, so its "stronger" but slover at top speeds... i think...

(my uncle had a golf, a few other vw-s and i remember his golfs headgasket going almost 10 years back, and it costed like 2000 Deutsch marks (about a 1000E to replace in a shop in germany)... not sure what could be so expensive... :-

Reading this post it would seem that it is a waste of time getting my Bis repaired!

I have owned both and have had problems with them equally.  I think it all comes down to maintaining them.  People would ignor the cooling system on a Bis and when one part stops working......gasket goes!

I like the Bis because it is a crap car, the engine is dodgy but you have to look after it.  I have always liked the idea of keeping things going that others tend to think is a waste of time and go for something they don't have to worry about but we shall leave this to the mainstreme car owners!

Both aircooled and Bis are great little cars but as an old classic car they need maintaning and if this does not happen they fail.

You really can't compare the two cars as they are completley different apart from what they look like.

This topic is a bit annoying now, we love the 126 in whatever form it is in, it was part of the production run and development of the car as a club I don't know why we have to slag off different models, which ever you have just enjoy it!

If you are worried about it that much get rid of the 126 and get something else and can we please start a thread on how to maintain instead of "mine is better that yours".

</1 You have to think about these things taking into account the bigger picture. That started with the invention of the internal combustion engine well over 100 years ago. The reason why web sites , forums , car clubs and so on exist is the passion of the "Motorist" for what a vehicle can bring. Wether you drive or own a Ferrari, Norton, Scammel or a Fiat we are all bonded by what they mean to us. Could be transportation , frustration , a thrill, a thing of beauty , an ugly beast , giver of freedom , drain on your wallet and a million other things. If anyone is embarrassed by their vehicle then you can just change it but if you drive a 126 of any type you are now driving a classic car. I met up with a guy in a nearby town recently to hand over some parts he wanted & just having two cars parked side by side , one a Bis , drew some attention then when we headed off it was great just to have the cars side by side on the one way system for a brief moment.
When it comes to arguements & bickering who are the very worst ? Family of course !
The Bis / Air cooled issue is now part of the family tree of motoring so keep on fighting as it just shows that you love the one you're with but you should know that when it comes to a re union or see another bro or sis out on the road you will feel the warmth

Ha ha ha, Bis V Aircooled is back again.  ;)

This will always be a subject that pops up from time to time.

AC = Slower, Noisy, less practical as far as boot goes, But more reliable and quirky.

WC = Faster, bigger boot, still quirky but in a different way.

126 = Slow, too small, Unsafe, Fun to drive easy to work on and Cheap.

I love aircooled 126s Never had a Bis but driven a few, I love the roar (splutter) of an aircooled, but if I see another 126 Bis, air, soft top, tuned to hell, rusty It still puts a smile on my face whatever the type. we are all mad for driving such zanny cars, but love them never the less.

So it doesn't matter what type of 126 they are all great (Just aircooled are better) ;)

Only Joking 8)

I hope none of theese replies post a wrong picture, we all (well i do) love both the aircooled and the bis model. I found this thread to be a fun timekiller, and nothing more, i wouldnt change my bis for anything else (not even an aircooled) but im planning to put a chrome bumpered aircooled right next to my bis in the foreseeable future. So dont see this thread as a negative argument, see it as a friendly discussion.
With respect to all 126es. Gordan.  </1 </1

p.s. ciaoflyer, dont be silly, you have to repair that bis    [-/

God if we cannot wind each other up a bit over our cars we might as well start separate websites!

Most of the replies I have seen have seen respect to both models regardless of what you own.

Fiat mean Fix It Again Tomoorow... regardless of model.

My air cooled will not overheat but the sodding points have given me headaches lately and the heater draws whatever fumes might decide to populate the engine bay into the car!

I could take a washing machine to the tip in the BIS but didn't have the confidence to drive too far with it and frankly stalled when I realised I wanted to boost performance, just because I can.

Rather than getting annoyed, just join in because it's fun!

right thats it air cooled owners meet me at clackets lane and we will move  to wipe out the bis monster that rears its ugly head in the north if it gets ugly up there we can always retreat knowing they wont be able to keep up due to overheating lol.
