i know it's not the normal kind of thing you find in a tuning section, but i'm interested in making my car go better without making it use more fuel.. or at least keeping it the same while using less fuel.
i'm about to try removing the breather pipe from the air filter (and installing a breather filter instead) to see if the pure clean air (not recycled) makes it run nicer.. but i dont know of much else that can be done..
any ideas?

repairing your carb would surely improve the economy a little, over here we have shops that specialise in carb repairs, and you can find repair kits on the net...
www.classicfiat.com item 5065 Carburetor repairing kit IMB 28, 36.52€

i didnt know my carb was broken:/ i think it just needs to be machined underneath..
i did win my car club economy run this year, i think my car is working relatively fine with a stock setup, i was just intersted in know how i could push it further.
by the way classicfiat.com doesnt seem to exist anymore:(
-
well id dint say it was broken, just dont know the right word for it, mines is not broken too, but it gozzles a lot of fuel, so ill go to the shop to have it repaired, whatewer, i dont really know what they do to the carb, just know that the man at the carb shop told me he could improve my fuel economy, it being 8-9l/100km
i googled the classicfiat yesterday and it worked fine? and today nothing
-
ah, i know what youre saying now, i might buy a kit and see how it goes:)
i found a couple on ebay anyway.

From what I understand, the jets wear over time.
I bought a new carb for a Datsun I had years back and it improved the car's economy amazingly.
-
yeah, but how much is a new carb for a 126 going to cost me?
i actually need a second one anyway, i've got an engine i'm building up.
-
axel gerstl - 166€....
-
166€
Blimey. Allegro about £15
-
 right
-
I have seen a 126 with an LPG tank in the back :???:

dajwid, if you can get me one for 15 ill pay you for it.

I am running a wideband lambda sensor on mine just to see how the mixture is set up on the carb, as I am going to fit fuel injection.
The stock carb (of course they all vary) is running pretty lean on the primary choke, about 1.15 lambda which I guess is close to optimum, but as you get the second choke cracked open the mixture richens very rapidly - it quickly progresses to a power mixture of about 0.8 lambda with any reasonable amount of opening.
So if you concentrate on driving without using the secondary choke you should see a good improvement in fuel consumption, but it won't go so fast.
Ignition timing - more advance generally helps as long as it isn't getting into knocking.
Raise the tyre pressures a bit will help but the handling will be different and will detriorate if you go too far.
-
i dont know anything about primary and secondary chokes, or lambda sensors.. fitting fuel injection sounds like a fun idea.. it would certainly be unique among my local fiat 500 club. i'd imagine theres a fair bit of modification involved though? where are you going to find a fuel injection system for a 2 cylinder? and how does it connect up?
and most importantly, how much would parts for such a thing cost?
-
hi guys, just a comment on mixture etc...dont forget that the fiat aircooled uses a slightly rich mixture for cooling purposes, iread this in some respected tome...buggered if i can remeber where tho  .....so dont go too lean....
-
how does it do that? and how do i tell if it's too hot? lol
-
mmmnnn, check out the blitz buggy tunin pages i think it was on there someplace.......
the richer mixture just makes the head run cooler......lean burn is always hotter.....the fiat engineers richend the top end mixture so the engine could run flat out with 4 fat italians in the car and not burn valves or pistons.....
as far as im aware all aircooled engines run richer at the top end for the same reasons.....of course im prepared to be shot down in flames by someone hehehe

Hi guys,
I was talking about my work on the Bis, I don't know about the air cooled, but as said above, air cooled engines are generally designed to run rich under high load conditions to help cool the engine. If the air cooled 126 has a twin choke progressive carb then it may be lean on the primary, but if it doesn't then I would guess it is fairly lean all the time.
Wideband lambda - I am using Innovate Motorsports products bought from graham goode racing but we are also about to try some cheap kit built ones we got from a guy in canada (found it on the net somewhere).
The fuel injection I am going to put on is a product we are developing for low cost motorcycles and utility engines, just thought it would be fun to try it on a 126. I will post details when it's done.
Someone pointed me to a link a while back where a polish guy has put a megasquirt controlled system on a bis using the throttle body injection parts from a cinquecento.

ah sorry, i jumped in without reading the whole post...my apologies....

Basically, the twin-choke carb is set-up to allow excellent fuel economy so long as you aren't trying to go too fast, whereby the second choke richens thing up. If you've got one of these engines, fit a stronger spring to the second choke so that you know when it's open.

i've had my oil breather filter on for quite a while now, and i havnt really noticed a change in economy, but i never actually took any numbers down. it has leaked a little bit onto the rocker cover and the area around the carb, but it only did it after some high speed country driving (doing over 100km/h)
i have used the heater and not noticed any oil vapor coming in, but i'm using synthetic oil which doesnt seem to give off particularly nasty fumes even when dripped on the exhaust..
i dont know how to tell if the car is happier or not..
