Title: acquired a 126 Bis for a low cost fuel injection prototype
Post by: fightingtorque on June 17, 2008, 12:26:50 PM
Hi guys,

I run a company which has developed low cost fuel injection for utility engines (mowers, generators etc) and small motorcycles.

The subject keeps coming up, what about small low cost cars, such as Tata's Nano (India) which has a 2 cylinder 700cc (ish) engine.  We have prototype mower engines including 2-cylinder engines of that kind of capacity for big mowers.

Amongst my car collection I have a cinq sporting, I wanted to get a Seic sporting and transplant a mower engine into that.  My colleagues felt it would be easier to use a citroen 2Cv as a prototype which already has a two cylinder engine.  I thought a 2CV would be perceived as too old fashioned / quirky.

So the plan was hatched to seek out a 126 Bis and I quickly bagged one up.  To be honest it isn't the best example but should be enough to prove the principle.

Had a nightmare getting it home as there is a problem either with the fuel pump or something in the tank/ lines, so it kept conking out every few miles.  Eventually I set it up with a 5-litre plastic fuel can gaffa taped to the side of the engine bay and gravity/ siphon feeding down into the pump which got it going.

I grew up with a modified hillman imp so the layout of the car and the way it drives was enjoyably familiar, although my imp had twice the power.

Anyway, looking forward to smartening this car up a bit, sorting out one or two issues and then getting it onto fuel injection, I'll keep you posted.

We are on www.scion-sprays.co.uk whilst my personal website is www.fightingtorque.com, although it's quite out of date, my current collection is an Esprit S4 (285bhp) E34 530i touring (210bhp), Cinq sporting (54bhp) and the Bis.  Despite the difference in power, I enjoy driving all of the first 3 so I imagine the Bis will also entertain me, it isn't just about bhp although more is usually a bit better.

Cheers,

Gav

welcome to the forum, fuel injection sounds interesting are you thinking of single point or multi point.

I'd have a go at injection on my BIS and air cooled.

Anything to save giving more money away in tax!

Welcome to the forum.

Cheers guys,

It will be an integrated throttle body unit - the throttle body also contains the ECU and injector(s).  Don't intend to develop a complete new one at this point so it will either be one designed for a 2 cylinder utility engine (because those are twin choke units and so will fit the bis manifold nicely) or else one designed for a 250cc motorbike (might need to be bored out a bit as the bis engine is obviously bigger and makes a bit more power).

Meanwhile got a few things to fix to get the car running properly as standard.

It's not the weirdest thing I've ever done.  I lived in China for 7 years and one of my projects was a chinese car, removed the fuel injection and installed a pair of 40 dcoe webers, high lift cam etc.  All simple tuning by uk standards but bear in mind every part had to be carried out in my suitcase on the plane in 2-3 trips a year, and it had to be set up on the road as there were no dyno's there.

Cheers,

Gav

welcome, sounds great, i look forward to hearing how it turns out, im sure there would be a lot of interest if you create something that works well.

Just clicked!  You saw my girlfriend the other day in the red bis.  I have another two 126's and her dads electric one at her place in Bracon Ash.  You can come and install fuel injection on one of mine when you have it figured!  Feel free to pop round some time, there are a few other nice cars here too!

Yep, that was me .

I'll keep you all posted, and might well need some help testing this, which could be fun.  Going to be abroad next week to visit a chinese motorcycle maker we are working with.   The car project is a kind of aside just to see how it works.

What kind of fuel consumption do you guys get from a Bis?  I guess about 40-45 mpg?   Potentially could be better but there are some limitations in the basic engine.  I'm going to start recording it, see how it goes.

Here is a link to BIS with injection, using parts from cinquecento and megasquirt

http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html

He says it worked great getting 4.5L to 100kms at -10C. Very impressive.

Good link.  Megasquirt is the cheapest for a DIY conversion.  Nice to see his lambda sensor location, I was wondering where would work well in the bis exhaust system, that looks like a good bet.

The system we are using is being prepared for low cost mass production to OEM on utility engines, small motorcycles and potentially small economy cars like the fiat 126's of the future!  The 126 application I am planning is to prove/ develop the product mainly.
