hello there , i have some more detials to try and identlfy my fiat 126 engine thats in my fiat 500 ..
that ive been told is a 549cc . aircooled engine ...
it bears the numbers fiat 126 4479407
then on the top near the rocker cover it says : s 62 ?
i have photos of it now ....
if i can work out how to post pictures of it i will ....
please somebody help me

Check the picture below for engine number location, it should be one of the following numbers?
110F.000
126A5.000
126A.000

you will then have a web address for your picture.
It is then a matter of when posting a picture use the Img button enter your web address for your picture and then click Close Tags.

It sounds very much like you have a 126 engine from what you are describing so there is no problem in fitting another 126 motor.
The main problem with the 500 and 126 engine swap is the gearbox bellhousing, this is because on the 500 engine the starter motor position is more or less on the top of the bell housing where as on the 126 it's lower down on the right hand side (distributor side)
What year is your 500 to confirm it's the D model?

Check the position of the starter motor this will confirm many things..

On checking your photos your 500 looks like a late 500F model or possibly a 500R which came with a 126 engine as standard?

as all it says on the log book os 2 axle rigid body saloon ??
it was registered in 1972 and bears the chassis number : 3083749
as somebody told me this :
As for wich model you have, If your 500 has a painted metal dash with a round speedo and no fuel gauge it is an F, the L has a plastic dash with a rectangular instrument panel with a fuel gauge, or it could be an R which I am not that familiar with but believe was similar to the L but with a 594cc engine and a 126 chassis, these were not sold from new in the UK.
and this : The chassis number rules out a 500R. From the outside there's no way of telling the difference between the f and l as, aside form the speedo, the distinctions were more of a marketing exercise than an exact science, and such a late F/L could well be a complete mish-mash as inventories were run down
and : Don't forget... for the L Dash to work, it must also have the fuel gauge sending unit on the gas tank (2 wires, I think). Mine only had the idiot light till I changed out the sending unit.
I have what I believe is an F model (also has an F in the chassis ID Number), but it has the L Dash.
Remember, if your car is 30-40 years old.... It could easily become a hodgepodge of parts due to multiple restorations.
The rear badges give the model? but, those are easily lost or changed.
I'm not sure about the distinctiveness of the front badges (which can also be changed)?.
* Badges with whiskers (covering the horn) on the older models, and at least some F models.
* Red Badges
* Rectangular Black & Chrome badges

I KNOW THIS IS A FIAT 126 SITE.... BUT IDEALLY IM AFTER LIKE IVE SAID A REPLACEMENT ENGINE AND GEARBOX SHOULD SOMETHING HAPPEN TO MINE THATS IN AT THE MINUTE...

Being a 1972 model it must be a 500F model.
The tell tale signs for the F model are:
Rubber carpets
No chrome strips in the windscreen rubbers
No Lock on the engine lid catch
Round speedo
These match you car.
You do find a few modifications carried out over the years by different owners which looks like they have been done too your car
Different badge on the front panel (500L badge fitted)
Seats from a 500L model (Common mod)
You do not have the L dash it's completely different it's oblong!
Also on the L model there is a small console around the gearstick.
I understand your predicament, but I believe like you that you have the F Model.
Did you find out the position of the starter motor?

The door cards are smooth in the F too, to me it looks like an F with 500 L bumpers (with nudge bars). However you dont have the moustache badge which the F has??? very strange, :roll:
My 500 whcih im restoring (if i ever get round to it) and is in bits is a 72" F

i will have a look at the starter motor position, tomorrow , im not very mechnically minded
so i will have to find the bell housing in manual ..
then tell you the position of it ....
further more, i put the front overrider bar on the car and the front badge...
i definately know it isnt a fiat 500l . as i dont have a petrol gauge i just have a light... and my cars hasnt ehf ixings for the front or rear overrider bars ... thats why i sold the rear ones on ebay ...

furthermore ... ive got a fair amount of paperwork with the car, and i cant see too much been done to it, also a close friend told me it was a fiat 500d .. but very late model, and he looked over it and said id brought a good car ..
all i can safely say is that it is originally meant to have been white
but its been : green, yellow, (white again) and now orange ...
im looking at the paperwork i have now .. and nowwhere does it mention a engine and gearbox change ? ....
i have a chassis number of : 110f 3083749 ( in 1993)
and in 1994 a engine number of 3409127
??? where would i find the engine number please?? or is it the : fiat 126 4479407 one as stamped on engine and what ive taken picture of ? ...
im looking at the most recent log book, and it displays the engine number 3409127 also ??? ....

My brother back in the 80's stuck a new 126 aircooled engine into his 126 in a couple of hours, he said it was very easy to do, so im assuming someone has just chucked the 126 engine in and sort of forgotten about it. If it was a masisve job it would of been well higlighted.
You car looks lovely, its been kept in good condition becuase o fthe amount of paint that has been applied over the years! a nice buy i rekon!
i still think its an F :lol: :lol:

hello ive looked in my car and im stil non the wiser ?
i cannot determine if the starter motor is low or high on the engine ?
also why would a fiat 500 engine be marked ( fiat 126 4479407 ) ?
if i seem thick im sorry, and would be gratful for any more help and advice

you have a 126 engine.
Just trying to work out if you have the 126 gearbox as well?
So there should be no problem for a 126 engine tranfer.

hello there the starter motor i can confirm is on the distribiter side..
i have some video of my engine and some new photos if anyone would like them? via email ?
the man that told me i had a 126 engine, also definately that i had a 126 gearbox aswell .. he had grown up with 500's he told me . so i trust his judegment ..
so if i did have a 126 gearbox and engine a stright swap is easy ?
and do u recommend gearbox and engine change in one ?

i have sorced some new engine numbers
it actually reads fiat 126 a ( then some zeros ) .. dont know how many as there is a bracket in the way and its hard to read further
furthermore i have also studdied the picture of the underneath of the 126 box, and it does look alot like my car

The problem you will now find is that your 126 gearbox which is fitted to your 500 has been adapted and fitted with 500 drive shafts. So if the gearbox is ok carry on using it with the new engine!
Remove the engine and gearbox together in one unit, when removed from the car, split the engine from the gearbox, this will also give you a chance to check if the clutch is ok and replace it if necessary.
Fit the new engine onto the old gearbox (if it's ok?) and then replace the engine and gearbox together back into the car.

im not removing it just yet, not unless it goes on me
i do know that it jumps out of first gear ( and clunks loud when does so )
and i been told this is a first sign of the gearbox going ?
.. although pulling off in 2nd is more than easy, its of course not ideal ...
i mainly asked all the above questions to find out , if i did indeed have a 126 engine and if so, if needed would a swap be quite easy ...
and from all your help and advice with help if needed , i know now i could have a stab... or failing that pay someone ..
so if you know of a aircooled 126 engine and gearbox going... whether its on a car or out .. and its cheap.. can somebody give me a shout .. im in leicester as you know .....
obvoisly im without a transporter, so a car with four wheels i could drive or tow would be a advantage .....
or if cheap enough i could borrow my mates car and trailer ....
or get it delivered to me ....

Hello chaps the wee car is a 500 f with 500 L nudge bars.The 500R had the FIAT oblong badge on the front panel and were only available in left hand drive(they wernt sold in the UK.)Hope this helps a bit. :D

Hi all, been a while since i have been here, sorry..............
I had a 126 with a 595cc lump in it and when i swapped it for a throbbing 650 i suffered no problems, to the best of my knowledge the only difference is the size of the bores 67mm to 70mm if memory serves correct (been along time thou). I am fairly sure there are no further differences, try the 500 forum (hurts to say it...) http://www.fiat500club.org.uk/ they have pretty much every 126 lumps shoe horned in 500's.

Hi chris soz its been so long, the 126's are in a lil trouble, poppy i think i shall have to make a descision on her fate soon, but buttercup is currently awaiting a cleaned carb and a lil tlc. And yes there isnt much difference between the bore of the 595 and the 650 as there is only 25cc (ml's) difference in each bore. The wife and myself are well but work is dull as ever, it just gets in the way of a good social life, do we now have a time of the week to meet in the forum? chat soon shagmeister
