My names Bill... pretty obvious, Id say.
Anyway, im looking for a 126.
Which brings me here. Ive been reading all the past threads about people buying The aircooled model or the BIS watercooled. And i know it might upset some people, but i'd prefer the BIS model. Just for the extra bootspace and the watercooling.
Personally im fed up of aircooled engines..... I actually ride a race tuned vespa...... its fast (75mph+) but aircooling.... not brilliant for long high rev journeys.... Heat seizures suck.
So my main question is, Is the BIS cheap? Ive seen them on ebay. And in autotrader and all that malarkey. But I just want a cheap little (rwd) runaround. To keep me happy and allow me to get rid of my Vespa..
And i have another little annoying question.... can you get 126 parts from garages/dealers??
-
My local fiat garage will order 126 bits in for me as the are still in the fiat parts calogue, although it can be difficult to find a garage to actually do the work (although, im a girl with a haynes manual and i can take it apart... mines aircooled though  ) The only parts that seem to be hard to get are head lights in RHD.
They're great fun though! And the bits are cheap compared to my seicento...
Main problem with the watercooled 126 is they are prone to overheating due to the size of the engine in proportion to the engine bay.
-
So don't break a headlight then :p
Well ive had experience building scooters, so i dont think that it'll be a problem fitting parts, its just buying them i was concerned about..
And really?? the Watercooled engines overheat?? Is that a big problem?
If so is it possible to vent the engine or put a bigger/ better radiator on them?

This looks interesting! Not sure how difficult it would be though :???:
Would mean a lot of pipe work to move the radiator...
-
hy, and welcome. i own a BIS model, and have never had problems with cooling. I live in a mediterranean city so long uphill drives are a must and my baby hasnt given me any problems.. (yet?) okay, one time it did blow a hose but it wasnt a major problem...
only problems i can see developing is thermostat or coller swich failure but that can be avoided (buying new ones or remowing the thermostat- like i did, and installing a manual fan switch just in case - like im gonna do)
youre surely going to have to fix a few glitches now and then but all in all its a fine and addictive car... :D :D
-
Cool. I noticed that the Water cooled engine is also under that floor pan... if i was going to use my 126 for high speed (well... medium speed to other cars...) journeys... would it possible to cut hole in the floor pan and have cold air feeds to the radiator?
-
Well the radiator is fitted to the side, and its pretty cramped in there, youd have to do some serious re- moddeling...

if i was going to use my 126 for high speed (well... medium speed to other cars...)
well, low speed actually :D
Top speed 116km/h on the bis,
0-100km/h in 33secs
110 km/h on the airc.
0-100 in 46,5 secs ?????
not trying to put you off but its the harsh truth :???:

LOL..... i have no idea what is slow in KPH.....
I do know the BIS will do 72mph though.... And im quite happy with that. Since most cars only do 120 to 150mph.
I'd say it was medium speed..... Try riding a standard vespa it will only do 57mph.... thats slow :)
-

well.. those vents in the rear quarters.... are they actually vents on the BIS model? And im sure that with a cold air feed pipe to the radiator then i could improve the cooling. Because even though its at the side, you would be able to reach it because the pipes are flexible....
But im sure the engine cant get much cool air to the radiator if its all self contained. It seems to me that the radiator would be expelling its heat into air that is probably too hot anyway, which will not be letting the cooling system work as good as it could.
Apologies for the large picture.
And for the fact that im going on about this. But im a trained engineer and automotive student.. and i have done refrigeration too..... And i have my heart set on one these amazing little cars. And i will do anything to stop it breaking down.
Now i just have to find one i can afford :)
-
Thats the spirit!!! :D
Good luck!!! :smt023
(i study economy and still find my way....)

lol....
Thank you very much... maybe one day i'll post a picture of the fastest and most reliable 126 with the BIS engine ever :)

Hi Bill , please do not take this personaly but I think that you will find that when it comes to the 126 air cooled / Bis debate you will find that you can chav it up as much as you like but hotting up is very much in the air cooled domain.
-
Chav?
LOL
I wish... I ride a 180cc racing vespa... not exactly chav :P
Hotting it up??
thats not a term ive heard before. :)
What kind of rebores will the 704cc BIS engine take?
Im sure that the aircooled engine will be easier to make it bigger capicity. But I'd rather have the BIS model. I can always up rate the cooling system, by running the Rad into the existing boot. Im not bothered about boot space particularly. Its a gorgeous tiny car.
I dont want to go car-booting in it :P
-
I think this is your idea of 'chavving up' a car
(http://ekwador.blox.pl/resource/Fiat_126p_03.jpg)
But this is the look i want for mine.........

the headlights are an exception..... :)

Oh right... i see.... You thought i was going to chav it up.. because of the cold air feed. Well they are going to be internal, and matt black, running out of view and out of the way. They only serve to pump cool air into the engine bay :)
Beats driving with the boot open on an aircooled :P
-
wow hold on there billy!! :D before you get carried away ( and belive me i know on these cars) let me explain the cooling system on the bis.... its crap! well not exactlly it should be perfectly addiquate, but its flawed in some places, but the good news is that it can be fixed.
firstly fitting a cold air feed on the side using the existing vents wont do much as the air rushing by wont be sufficiant to chill the rad, and the rad fan sucks air from the drivers side, over the engine, and out of the passenger side so you dont wanna block it up!. what i'm doing on my bis is fitting a pacet competion fan. It will suck twice as much air, and i'm also wiring it in to a switch in the dash board too, and if you have the money, invest in a "thermostat transfer kit". this moves the thermostat to the top of the engine where it should be.
i love your enthusiasum for the bis model as it does come under fire alot for poor reliability and it does'nt get the tuning support of the air cooled, but if you sort the cooling out they are a very good little engine.

Thanks for the support.... Im in no doubt over who to come to if i have cooling problems with my BIS.
Which i was supposed to pick up on sunday. But Ebay let me down. And now its been taken off :(
Im stuck making plans for a car i may not get til next month :(
Oh well... life goes on...
Is it possible to reroute the rad? for example, put it in the boot?
or is the comp system the only way forward with it?
Still miffed i cant have the car ive been planning for months.. back to the drawing board :)
-
dont be down hearted bill I lost out 3 times before I got mine -even a cheap cabrio!!!! they come along often and they are worth it!
-
Aircooled ones are, in my opinion, more manly.

by boot you mean the front? yes it can be done, takes alot of time and effort ( you know water pipes and cutting a hole in the front etc ) i would stick to improving whats already there so the comp fan is a good upgrade and if you have the money, you could always get an electric water pump for it?
-
Thanks mate. ill see what money i have....( im due some compensation from a serious motorbike crash soon) Hopefully a couple of handfuls of cash :P
-
Ive been cruising around on ebay searching for my dream car when.....
i found this horrible thing :)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1991-FIAT-126-BIS-IN-GIRLIE-PINK-SPARES-OR-REPAIRS_W0QQitemZ330218180080QQihZ014QQcategoryZ9843QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
if it were blue or red i would have bought it there and then... but look at the colour....
even the description says " girlie pink"
:)
Some people will do disgusting things :(
-
hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! :smt043 :smt043 :smt043 :smt044 :smt044
That is really GAY!!!! :smt003 (no offence to anyone :smt023 )
and it used to be a beautiful red....
-
not got a girlfriend gordan??? lol
-
rub it in why dont you....
:D :D
-
hey billy, you should have a look at that white blosoming one:) it looks decent enough, and looks like it has potential... :smt023
that blue one is located a few kilometers from where i live, but ive never seen it drive, looks nice
-
Chav?
I wish... I ride a 180cc racing vespa... not exactly chav :P
please dont tell me that the white px is your "racing vespa" with its moddy mod mod mud flap on it!?!?
-
lol...it used to have a mudflap on it. It was ok when it was standard.. stopped the white bits at the back getting dirty.. til i rounded it off on corners :P it has a mk1 PX rear mudguard on it now. That picture is the only one i had that would fit the avatar dimensions. If you could see it properly you'd see it has a simonini pipe in that pic... not what I'd call "racey" :P
its more of a street racer... than a racer... I obviously couldnt use a race scoot on the road.
Its fast enough for me though.
Dr 180, Si 24/24, ported casings, fly wheel machined to match clutch, sterling pipe.
Kept the standard crank though. I didnt want to buy a 3rd party race crank.
Im guessing you have a scoot then :P
-
got a vespa myself (well my bro anyway) a nice restored, standard p 200 e
(http://club126uk.co.uk/forum/userpix/559_DSC04744_1.jpg)
dont know why youd want to tune it, its rally powerful the way it is, half the power of a bis on 100 kilos... plus those small tyres are real killer... :D
-
I tune it because i want more power. Im 18 and i can only ride a PX125.
i tune it to get to 200cc power. Mines got slightly more than a standard P200.
Its nice to do more than 57 mph :P
-
that wespa scares the sh** out of me.. im not the best driver there is, and with wheels the size of a donut, i wouldnt dare to go fast... but thats just me, i like cruising in sunshine, with the music on, and the windows down, a regular low-rider  , speed isnt my obssesion, but again, thats just me...
-
i got a p2, its standard at the moment tho, helping a mate fit a nos system to his 210, so i will see how that performs and may follow that route also!!
what scooter rallys you doing this year?

Its nice that... Im more into tuned scoots.
Id love that Cutdown. Its really nice.
My mate used to have one like that. His was a rally, with aprilia sonic forks.
He built this one too :P

Im going to skeg and cleethorpes :P
Im busy for most of the others. But I'd love to go to them.
