Title: Alternator Drive Belt

Hiyall

Just a quicky, can anyone tell me how i should install a new alternator belt? Also how do i adjust the tension, without the tool recommended in the workshop manual?

Hi,  you need a 17mm spanner (ring type is best) undo the bolt from the back of the alternator adjust bracket and push alternator towards engine to release belt tension...
If its really stiff undo or slacken the bottom bolt too!!
fit new belt, I tension it by shoving a trolley jack handle between the alternator and engine block and pull it towards the alternator... then I tighten the 17mm nut again..

be very carefull with the BIS aternator adjustments,its common for the casting to snap off the block  :shock: ...............you know,id love to meet the clown/s who were responsible for the lancia/fiat/fsm w/c 126 motor...

Better tension it just enough to take out the ignition light then eh?

iv just tensioned my alternator drive belt - but, the technique is different from yours.

Iv got a split pulley with shims on the alternator - so used a long spanner on the centre nut to lock it and then a small wrench to remove the 3 nuts and washers on the pulley. It comes apart quite easily and there was 2 shims holding the pulley sides apart / spacing - I took one shim out, bringing the sloped sides of the pully closer together and replaced the 3 washers and bolts - the tension is perfect now.

care was needed tightening the pulley as it began pinching on the belt, so worked tightening the bolt closest to the engine pulley 1st as the belt doesnt sit in there and then rotating a 1/3 of a turn each time until the pulley was closed up.

was an easy 15 min job once i knew what was involved and that this car doesnt have an alternator on an adjustable mounting - which would have been much easier.
