Title: Me again
Post by: Darrell on June 06, 2007, 03:48:19 PM
Ok so the air-cooled has taken-on a character that has brought me to call it 'Enzo'.....dunno why but it fits for some reason.

I got a pair of Wolfrace slotmags on it now with the low profile cinqeucento tyres on...looks like a proper job, wheel arches have to be extended..

Think lowering is in order and new shocks fitted all round.

Now...so as I remember it, vacuum assist breaks run off the intake manifold of most cars, so with some professional modifications from myself I am figuring that the only way to get vacuum/servo onto the air cooled is to do the same.

A small servo from like a micra, the old alfa 1300's had a remote servo which might aid the placement, how it worked I'll ask my dad, if I remember rightly it had two...

So there is my plot, alfa servo plumbed into the intake manifold...

The question is.....will it work?

Any thoughts....and dont you all go buying-up all the alfa 1300 servos now!

Still can't see much point in fitting a servo to a 126, a good front disk conversion yes, but what advantage will you get with a servo on such a small light car?

Do you have disks fitted?

I have non servo disk brakes on my 500 which will easily lock up in the dry if I stamp on them hard enough, would a servo not just make the wheels lock up even easier but with even less feel.

If you had weak ankles or another physical reason for not being able to apply reasonable pressure to the pedal then fair enough, but for what its worth, you could end up making the car more dangerous, unless you are really thorough with you calculations, work out the required forces and use a servo that delivers the correct pressures.

A lot of race cars have the servos removed to allow for more 'feel' with out a loss of ultimate braking power.

It might be worth looking at a slightly uprated master cylinder and using braided lines to replace old flexy, make sure all the components in the whole system are evenly matched.

HI Mick thanks for that! I am definitely keen on the tailgate.

I havnt tried a disc brake conversion on either car, it was just a thought but then the biggest problem the BIS suffers from is brake fade.....especially on those long exits from the motorway bringing it down from 75/80.

There have been days I have prayed there is no trafic on the roundabout.

One in particular is a long downhill.

I guess then it makes sense to convert to discs, braided hoses should give a less spongy feel and all should be well.

The only thing the servo will help with is not having to push so hard on the brake pedal I suppose.

But I'm broke again, spent too much on e bay buying bits I like the look of for the air cooled.
As soon as she's decent, and has all her bits one colour and the rust sorted I shall post a pic.
So far I have had so much fun with this air cooled and it isn't even on the road!
Take care guys
