Looks great, might do this to mine if the head gasket ever goes!
nice one!

How did you guess? i have a copper one but i did'nt know if it was any better? i got big plans for this engine, i mean i'm not gonna get megga hp out of it but i'm aiming for a 7-8 hp increase, which dont seem alot but when you've only got 26hp to start with, then anything helps right?
-
bang on,anything from 1hp up is good, copper gasket is better for heat transfer, sealing and seating, any engine that suffers from head gasket problems benifits from copper.(we always fitted them to WW2 willys/ford jeeps).....wat you got planned???.....ive allways wondered wat parts from aircooled would fit bis, cams etc,and also in reverse,704cc aircooled ??.....
-
i got loads in the pipe line.I was just gonna do a rebuild, but i found so may areas where improvment could be made. the first was the lack af air getting in the engine, i'm supprised it did'nt choke to death! so i've opened up the ports a bit and modified the inlet manifold.and with a k&n air filter from my old car grafted on, this should let abit more wind in.
I've also lightened the flywheel, it seemed ridiculously heavy for an engine that size, so i've had some material shaved off. it still weighs over 5kilos!
then theres the cooling, which is a very poor design, so i,m fitting, an electric water pump, an electric fuel pump, and fancy ht leads too,
-
a word of warning with the flywheel, its balenced with the crank,so when you lighten it you not only throw it out of balence.....but it cannot be balenced seperatly, nigel told me this and ive since seen it elswhere, thats why all my engine bits are winging there way to uk for dynmic balencing,i have cut loads from my flywheel,(and 2mm from the head)... !!!
-
doh!! wish i'd known that before  never mind, i have'nt taken that much off just that 200 tho step at the back
-
while your this far id get the whole lot balenced,i took the whole extra lump off the back as well, and refaced the clutch side.aparently they have to be out of balence to be balenced :???: to compensate for the crank web and the rotational forces of both pistons decending,in fact im told ,the idea is to move the vibration up beyond 6ooo rpm, where a 126'r on standard crank wont go wothout a bang.
im using JJ engineering in swindon,01793 740169, he did nigels and knows the probs of the twin  ,

Hi
I notice you live in Rugby, just down the road we should meet up!
-
blimey gadge you dont hang about
looking great!!
wish i could work as fast as that.
Chris
-
you could chris, if you wasnt a lazy good for nothing overdraft ridden student..... :D
-
hahaha, cheaky git!
i wish it wasnt true
Chris
-
chris, if your a student, then you own the perfect car! thanks for all the advice, theres alot of money going into "the little one" so the finished result should be good. i'm going for a retro look, so its getting chome bumpers fitted and losing all that 80's plastic down the sides
-
Hi
I notice you live in Rugby, just down the road we should meet up!
sounds like a plan i only live in newbold as well
-
when you bin the plastic, make sure you go the extra mile and lose the corner pressings as well, they dont look so good with those showing behind the chrome bumpers.......just done all mine, just need some powder coated bumpers now.....
-
yeah its all going dave, i'm even cutting out the bumper mounting holes on the side and welding in a plate to smooth it out, i did of course think about replacing the wing ( which i have to do anyway ) with early air cooled type, but aparantly, they won't fit the bis models
-
no,they dont fit,the late a/cooled and bis have more of a flared wheel arch.......and wings are a pain to do,that little flitch or whatever its called panel is a nightmare.......but then im not a panel man
i cut those pressings out and tacked a patch in,not structural so i didnt spend to much time on them to be honest.
-
r they bad then? never done one before whats involved?
-
well the wing tucks up underneath them, and they are welded to the scuttle panel, god knows how to replace without cutting wing or removing the small panel, then you have the problem of re welding underneath the scuttle......proper body shop stuff
-
doh! i was kinda hoping it would be simple
-
yes indeed,i had a sizable bit of corrosion on one front wing,i opted to cut it out,and mig in a bit of a spare wing....easier if a little time consuming.....oh i wish they bolted on !!...that could be the way for you,buy a new wing and use it as a repair panel.....
-
now that is a pretty good idea! never thought of that :D
