Title: bis disc brakes?
Post by: lilp4130 on March 29, 2007, 11:26:59 AM
hi i'm wondering if  the disc brake conversion kits available for the bis use cinquecento discs and if so would these be a worthy alternative??

any discs will be an improvement on the standard drums, the kits are either polski fiat 124/5 , ford fiesta , cinq/scien. based .

Just recieved the rest of the disc conversion kit for my 500 from TRS in Poland ( http://www.trs-racing.yoyo.pl/hamulce%20przod%20126p.htm )

'Cause I'm converting a 500, I also got refurbed 126 uprights, bearings bushes etc.

Stuff arrived promptly.....Great service and good prices !

I'll post some Pics later

Cheers
Gerry

I wish I'd waited and bought mine from them too. After so many attempts and modifications I just cannot get my disc brakes to fit into my 500/early 126 wheels. The calipers are just too big it seems. I bought the conversion flanges and even had some extra spacers made up.
I'm desperate to use them, but they will not fit into the rim!
Has anyone alse had similar problems?

Hi Dom Can't you fit bis hubs and wheels to your 500 to give you extra clearance?

it is possible to grind small amounts from the caliper,i think hudson henry mentioned this to me ages ago,the kit i have will not accept fsm steelies without this mod,i will do it in the near future so i can have the choice of 12 or 13 inch rims

That I fear is my only option but I wont attempt it just yet. May try the Bis hub idea first, though I doubt my caliper will even fit in a bis hub, it barely squeezes into a fiat bravo 15" rim! Not sure about what is the max size wheel my 500 arches can take either

I did indeed take an angle grinder to my calipers, I had the same combination – early 126 wheels and disk brakes). I also used 10mm spacers. It took a little bit of work but it all worked out in the end.

Is there anything I can do to squeeze this set up into a 12 steely rim? pretty please

what i'd do is pack out the spacer with washer until there is enough clearance then measure the spacer and the washers, solid spacers are available in different thicknesses and if they don't fit into the adapter ring i'd take them to a machine shop to have the diameter cut down to fit. and use extended wheel bolts.

no worries!what's your kit based on?i read on the TRS site these kits can be based on polonez or cinquecento may be a set of calipers from the other kit would cure your problem?

it will work dom, keep at it.if it was easy everyone would do it..

P.S. Have you tried using 2x10mm spacers to see if that will give you enough clearance ?

have tried using 2 of the spacers and the caliper still doesn't clear the rim. If i go any further, the flange will no longer be over the dust cap of the wheel bolt, and I think the wheels will probably fall foul or the arches and thus fail an mot. I will try though and see how much it takes for the caliper to be free from the inside of the rim.

I am not sure what car the calipers come off originally, I believe either the polonez or a Fiat Uno I think. They say fiat on them

Nigel, was your brake set up the same as mine or was it from Rudd - fiesta?

this seems very odd,Dom,i dont mean to be rude, but ave you assembled it all correctly?...is the disc fitted and the caliper fittd to the correct side of the new backplate?......are the calipers handed?,a good indication is where the bleed nipple is,it should be above the brake pipe fitting, please dont take offense ,but it does seem odd that the caliper is so big an intrusive to the back of the wheel, the kit was sold as 126/500 right?.

loike i say, please dont take offense.

No offence taken, I am a complete novice, so any advice is taken as just that. I'm pretty sure it is assembled correctly as the disc is right against the hub and caliper can only fit in the position it is in. I'm beggining to think that I have been fleeced and kit is not really right for the car.
Got it from Italian ebay, but didn't actually buy it through ebay, but through a personal seller via paypal on the side. The listing does day uit is 126, but he supplied me with 'the complete kit' here is the listing

Has had lots of good feedback and has sold around 20 of the same kits. I got it complete with kingpins, stub axles etc and expected it to be a bolt in swap.

mmnn, cant see much from the pics....is it depth that prevents the wheel bolting up or diameter?.....

It is a mixture of both. Very frustrating. I will have another play at the weekend and see what is exactly the problem. I think it is mainly deth that is the problem, but as a consequence the dimeter becomes too small as the wheel is cone shaped

That would be fantastic as I don't want to give up and be lumbered with a useless set of brakes

Hopefully I will fix the old drums this week, so at least the car will be back on the road - it's been over a month of it just sitting getting more rusty

Cheers Dave

i'm using this old topic again........
i have a set of cinquecento disc's & callipers in my possesion
and have made up a caliper bracket for one side from 6mm plate steel but now the bis front hub wont go back onto the axle far enough because it is touching against the plate steel has any one fitted a bis disc conversion??
(i dont know if they are any different to air cooled ones!)
could some one post a template up please?or let me know of any spacings etc i may need?
thanks in advance
paddy! :???:

does your mounting plate look the same as the TRS ones?

if its not clearing then it sounds like the brackets will need a bit more material removed from around the centre axis

i made them pretty similar to the trs ones,
working from a template.... i was hoping that wouldnt be the case
but i guess i'll have to get the pencil grinder out!!
