rightho i have a small problem with me car , oil is coming out of the rocker cover breather its not just a little but lots. can i block this breather? will it cause damage to the engine if i do? and why is the oil pushing up so much through the breather? help!!!!!
-
hi mick, first,is this with the alloy rocker box i sent you?...if so it MUST have that baffle in.
if it has ,or your still with the tin one,it sounds like you may have 'blow by' past the piston rings, pressurising the crankcase too much.
you cannot block the vent, both pistons decend together and the cranckase needs to vent up through the pushrod tubes or it will blow oil seals/gaskets................
it is possible you have too much oil in?.....thats a clutching at straws one tho......
-
the blow past would explain the slapping/knocking noise of your engine Mick? Its a relatively low milaged car for an aircooled.

Chris

possible head gasket problems? pressurising the crankcase
A compression test may help to locate the problem.

easy enough to get another motor tho if its knacked?.................also,i will have a decent set of second hand pistons and barrels in january if you want them just for the postage?,just get a set of rings from gerstl,i think around £14.00....... :smt030 thats a couple of options mick

Chris, Mick was having oil coming out of that hollow bolt. so head gasket would cause this pressure?
Mick i thought you did HG?

ha ha ha the alloy oil catch had fell off again so that will have to be looked at again. the head gasket went when i went to see chris and that has been replaced . i have blown out my dipstick twice that could be because of worn barrels and rings but i have been really pushing the car when this has happenned ( on m20 taking it off the clock....). i have put on the original rocker cover and its settled right down . i have spoke to middle barton today and i shall get some new barrels pistons and rings . i might even go down the bigger bore route if i am going to buy new stuff. so i might have a look at fitting some vw bits for that 160000000cc juiced up look........thanks for all your help :smt114

nice one......get a new dipstick rubber,i did after the same thing happened.
before you go to M B G check out gerstl..........115 euro for two barrels pistons and rings  .
bigger bore?...youll need these to get the best from 700cc + carb? + cam?+ panda head?......he he he he he you are on the edge of the slippery slope to the £££ $$$ pit now my friend
dont a$k me how muc£ mine i$ so £ar................

well i changed the rubber but is very loose still, i dont know if a different plug has been used at some time (ie metal gucci type) but the openning is deffinatelly bigger so i have just whacked some tape around the dipstick rubber until it fitted nice and snug . i did that on thursday and it hasnt done it since. i used to get the same on the bis and it was only when i used to rag it good and proper so it could be my aggressive driving technique....as for the bigger bore route , they cost the same as the standard stuff.. thats what my wife thinks . welcome to the money pit!!!!!

he he he he welcome friend.............................

got up early today 03h30 (the woes of nite work cant sleep at weekends!!)and went for a nice little drive , no oil leaking out so it must have been the oil catch where it came loose again plus i think the breather hole is a little small on the alloy rockercover so i will drill it out and re tap it to accept a larger diameter pipe . and rethink how to connect the oil catch back on again. i had used small bolts where i drilled through the top of the filler neck but the vibrations have made them disintergrate . i might try this again but this time use some jb weld to help fix it in . do you think this will do the job?
-
mick,i was gna get it welded back on.........

yeah but its an alloy and such a bitch to reweld plus the paint and lacquer would proably be knackered in the process. we shall see what happens but that would be the only choice left if this fails.
