hi all, got my haynes manual today but there's hardly any reference on how to change the oil, just states where it's located..
do i need to remove the rear apron and will the fan belt have to come off also??
i guess there's no sump plug (?) do you just undo the outer housing and the oil drains out?
thanks for any help!
-
There is a sumplug under the sump, you only need to remove the cover you mention in order to clean out the centrifugal filter.
-
ahh..cheers,... should i use petrol or paraffin to clean the centrifugal filter?
-
yes there is a sump plug on the right hand side of the vehicle (drivers side)
Oil Filter Removal
Remove the 6 bolts (10mm) from the filter cover. Put a piece of rag underneath to catch the oil that will pour out. Carefully take off the cover. Do not prise with with a sharp instrument or the soft metal face will be marked and may leak. Take out the rubber sealing ring. Scrape out the dirt collected on the outside of the filter, from both the half still on the engine, and the cover. Take care no dirt gets into the oil passages of the engine that lead to and from the filter, near the centre of the filter.
I would use something like gunk or white spirts to clean the cover.
Good Luck!
:D

Hi all, i need to do the same, greenfly can you by any chance take any pics of what your doing? so we can put it in the workshop section of the website? like you said there is no reference to it in the manuals, so it would be great for everyone to see. A couple of pics would be great if you havnt already completed it.
kind regards
Chris

hi,just to mention, before you remove the cover, mark its position, the bolt holes are not equally spaced,it will save you some hassle when you come to put it back on.............also,GENTLY tighten the fixing bolts in a criss cross pattern, not too tight, just nip them up,if you can,use a 1/4 drive socket set,you will get less leverage with a small wrench and not risk stripping threads etc,
have fun!
-
Yes some very good points there!
recommended torque are only 6ft/lbs for the oil filter cover

thanks everyone! some sound advice there.. my car's being delivered to me on Thurs morning, so i'm armed with brake fluid, steering, engine and gearbox oil,fan belt, plugs and points... it's all go!
(in view of that lot, no doubt i'll be back on here needing help!)
thanks again
-
Chris,
just noticed your post,.. sure i'll take a load of pics as i progress and let you have them, (hopefully not in the section - 'How to bugger up your engine' ) :D
can't wait to bleed the brake fluid and replace on my own! i think you can buy a kit now to help you do this..
by the way my insurance quote (for 1500 limited mileage+ agreed value) via Peter Best was ?109 for the year inc. legal protection and some other charge for ?5 but i can't remember what that was for.. i'll try a couple more by way of comparison..
cheers..

Thanks Green fly, thsoe pics would be good, they will help everyone. Any problems just get straight back on here. There a lot of people who know alot. I'm not particulalry good with engines but i am completly familiar with the 126's. Although best off getting someone else to help you. I bet its like christmas for you! get the old wax, go easy on the tea cut though keep its orginal shine like you described, and keep it out of the sun
About the insurance i dont know how good that is. If that was my insurance i would be delighted given my age. Keep hunting around!
regards
Chris

Just take your time servicing it, dont break anything! I bet you cant wait till Thursday!
-
Don't forget to get the engine nice and hot before draining off the old oil, you will find it gets more of the muck out!
-
you're right fsm.. really can't wait!
i've bought one of those oil additives to run round while the engine gets hot to help get rid of sludge and stuff!
no need for t-cut Chris thankfully, just a little wax, i'll get some pics as soon as i can, maybe a few tomorrow night..
thanks again peeps!

whats the best oil to use????
i no the good thing is you by 5L of oil and do 2 oil changes well the book says it holds 2.2L got a sump plug like bolt on the left side of the engine whats that for?
and how do you change the gear box oil????
sorry bout all the Q's
lee

thats ok m8, if nobody asked questions we wouldnt have a forum.
Gear box oil is EP 90,
and engine oil is 15w40 is recomended! 15 or 20 w40, part synthetic is best!
have you got a manual? here is an online version of the manual on the hungarian club site. http://www.fiat126.hu/book.php?book=15
the sump plug bolt, is directly underneath the oil dipstick, next to the thermostat housing. Becareful when tightening back up, they thread themselves easily i find.
The gear box drainage is, underneath the car about in the middle of the car, its an indented bolt. Ask greenfly, hes become an expert of draining 126 gearboxes , the filler bolt is (when looking underneath car from pasenger side) to the side of the gear box, quite high up.
hope this helps m8

hi maxlee... sounds like you've found the centrifugal oil filter.. its behind the right hand drive belt pulley.. to get the back panel off the car is easy enough but a complete bar-steward to get back on!!
see pic of mine bolts removed and filter cleaned, youll have to copy this link in google:
http://images.ofoto.eu.com/photos131/7/69/21/19/88/0/88192169733_0_ALB.jpg
the bolt that sits through the big compressed spring is a nightmare to locate under the exhaust manifold and tighten down at the same time and you'll never do it on your own! (in the end i used those plastic ties you can get either side of the spring and tried to compress it!)
don't know how you'll get the filter cleaned without removing the rear apron, so make sure you have the engine well supported on a trolley jack because everything goes once the bolt is undone!
i used gunk to clean the filter and replace with a new seal, then tighten the cover back on, i bought millers oil, i think it was 20-50 classic, good stuff..
you may have read my post about gearbox oil.. make sure you can get the filler plug undone before you drain the gearbox oil out! it's located towards the engine obviously higher up than the drain plug which is clear to see.. the drain plug is a 12mm square socket attachment, the filler plug needs a 12mm female square drive socket or as 'Cars' mentioned the reverse of a 1/2 inch socket drive fits!
again i used millers gearbox oil (not hypoid) just a 70-80 grade..
hope thats covered it.. good luck!!

OK, reading this string, I need to refill my gearbox oil.
I don't have a manual for my BIS, so was going blind when I changed the oil. I found the sunken drain plug, undid it, and loads of black stuff came out, so I thought I had cracked it.
Of course, only then to find the other drain plug below the dipstick.
I was hoping that the gearbox and engine used the same oil, as it all looked and felt the same.
I still have a lot to learn, and this site is my best source of information so far.
Thanks All
-
its ok m8, im sending you a workshop manual with your membership package ive sent you an email
no the gear box and engine oil are different, you have to use gearbox oil, its EP 90 and the engine oil is 15w 40 part synthetic is good! Halfords best option!

Chris

Well, after a bit of grunting, and getting covered in nice new gearbox oil, it's refilled.
I think, reading other posts, I was lucky. The plug came out with a 13mm spanner and a short length of steel pipe for leverage.
I had the rear wheels up on ramps to get underneath, but had to feed the bottle over the top of the exhaust to 'hit the hole' with the nozzle.
Be warned, do not lay directly underneath when trying to 'hit the hole' with the bottle.
Very messy, as I found out on 2 occasions. You would have thought after the first attempt I would have moved wouldn't you
Thanks to all who posted bits on this issue, as usual, it was invaluable.
