i have a problem with fuel consumption i am only getting about 110 miles out of a tank of petrol , have checked timing , points , mixture and all seems okay cant see any fuel leaks and does nt smell of petrol . any guesses? help! its bloody expensive this aircooled lark!!!....ha ha

thats about right mick,i assume your right foot as heavy as mine???......my modded one is struggling to give 90 to the tank........

im sure i used to get nearing 200 miles a tank in my BIS?
any fuel in the oil mick?
might also be worth replacing the fuel pump or at least testing a new one. I was getting poor MPG when my pump was shot.

had a check of the valve clearances and found them to be way too tight . have adjusted to correct widths . were they allowing too much fuel through? i also think there is fuel in the oil it smelt like it under rocker cover. i shall see tonite it starts better now at least . oh dave as for heavy right foot , i somehow manage to get 75 up on the clock on m20 dont know how accurate it is but not bad for a little yellow hairdryer!!!

mick...valve clearence MUST be checkd cold eh????.....they do tighten a lot even warm(alloy push rods)...i do with overnight stone cold engine,and leave a little more gap as well..ie..feeler gauge 'loose' ,not,'just so'..get my drift?
the aircooled is not so prone to fuel pump probs as the dreaded bis,oil often smells a bit petroly tho,you done an oil change?,preivious owner may have just done short trips with choke on.....that screws the oil........

previous owner did do only short hops, did check dead cold and did seem to run alot better after , drive to work tonite about 35 miles will see if its any better. fingers crossed mick

oh chris is there an anti syphon /theft device fitted to the bis petrol tank?as i tried to syphon out of both my bis s and is impoosible to get into the tank....

cool.......anyone buying a 126 has to accept that it will have had poo service routine............monkey mechanics will hate working on them.and owners will just buy them to drive into ground....i like giving them the rolls royce service treatment myself.......its great to see the engine oil pure and green.........and the gear shifting/steering free up with new lube :lol:
mick.last twit to do the clearences was prob doin them hot,then blamed''poo fiat'' when it ran like crap..........example,my local citroen dealer storeman didnt carry points for a 2cv.swore blind to me that they didnt have/need them.......so,no jersey dealer serviced citroen 2cv's ever had the points done,can you believe that??? awsome.........

no mate there isnt, but its funny you should say that as other people have had trouble trying to sphon the fuel out.
there is just a very shar bend on the filler kneck thats the only bit i can see that would prevent you from getting the tube down there.
if you go inside the car remove the wing card, you you can then see the filler neck unclip it and stick the pipe down there. All i can suggest,

yep i did an oil change tonight the clean un-spoilt oil
love it!! :lol:
im going up to north at the weekend, so i like to have fresh oil in for all thoe miles. One thing im worried about is my thermostat flap was closed still after i had been round the block, its always usualy open. I dont wnat it over heating??

dnt panic,they failsafe in the open position....also,lots of air escapes undr the housing.........it is getting cooler chrs,also,if your worried,split the rear deck like i have.......

funny you on about the thermostat .. i checked mine and it does nt work!! it also states that this can have an effect on petrol consumption.....mmmm perhaps my right foot aint so heavy .its a bit of a laugh getting the cover off isnt it? i had to remove the engine mount to remove the hollow bolt. its easier to take out the loody engine and put it on a bench.!!!
