I've just recently finished installing my nice shiny new 126 engine and gearbox in my 500 and have managed the huge distance of 5 miles before my first breakdown. I went out this morning and the car just stopped after half a mile and now refuses to start. On checking I have no spark whatsoever. I've rechecked the points and the timing hasn't changed so I suspect the new coil-the square wasted spark type. Any idea how to check or whether it's something else?

just a thought. Did you fit a ballast resistor to the coil?
-
No but I thought that tended to make a longer term difference to points and plugs rather than the coil and surely it wouldn't go down after 4-5 miles without one?

Usually with ballast resistor coils, they are designed to run at a lower voltage something like 6-9v. If there is no ballast resistor in circuit the coil runs at 12-13v, it can then cause damage to the ignition components.
