Apologies if I am using the wrong terms. I am trying to familiarise myself with as much as possible with absolutely no mechanical sense. I am stuck trying to remove the cylinder head of my 1990 bis. I think I removed all nuts necessary but this thing will not budge! Several hits with a mallet as well as using a large piece of wood for leverage, nothing.
I attach images below. Am I missing something to get it to come off?
Now for the new issue, I read a post here someone suggesting to move the engine to get it to free. I put the engine back on and connected the starter, tried to crank and was very hesitant to move. Something started smoking. I removed the engine again and now the starter will not activate. Did I destroy the whole starter or just the solenoid possibly? The engine is not seized and can turn it no problem manually. What can I do to determine exactly what broke?
Took the engine out because of recently discovered water/coolant in the oil as well as the cylinder head. Noticed some rust using a borescope inside one side of the cylinder head. I assume this is possibly due to a bad head gasket? What about the water in the oil? Would replacing all gaskets solve this?

The inlet manifold needs to come off, as there are 2 nuts behind it.
