Looking for someone that has good knowledge of the aircooled engine that’s local to Nottingham,
Cars running really lumpy and hot
I’m at a loss and just want someone who knows these engines inside out to come, tinker with the carb (which is what I believe the problem is) and me be able to enjoy this car!
I appreciate any comments with suggestions but Iv tried everything that people have suggested!
At this rate she’s going to get put to the back of the garage never to be touched again and another project be put in her place haha
Had all new ignition system (twice) and now the third time had electronic ignition fitted
Carb been rebuilt and cleaned... second carb fitted still same
Had full service
Whilst I’m here... what’s the running temp of the aircooled engine?
Mine gets to 160•c on the head when driving around! (Then I pull over and let’s cool down)
Electrics have been checked
Iv done everything iv been able to find on google for 126 and 500
Iv spent hours on google, hours on the phone to people hours and hours in the garage trying everyone’s suggestions
Just fed up now!

Have you done a compression test on it yet?
-
Have you checked the Bakelite gasket spacer on the inlet manifold/Carb for any cracks etc? This sometimes gives the problems you are describing.
-
Yes and I have changed it for another spacer and still the same
Not checked compression yet as compression isn’t in the manual, it’s just says compression ratio 7.5 : 1

Hi,
If I remember correctly, the operating head temperature of the aircooled 126 is 120°C, under normal conditions. 160°C is still OK for highway speeds I guess. It would be easier to find more info if you google for VW Beetle. Same story there.
Make sure that you are using the correct heat range of the spark plugs.
PS- Do not get upset. This "p" in 126p stays for "problems" with reason ;D

In regards with the compression test:

Ok....
So... playing with OPD again,
I read a post online about an over heating car... they suggested removing the air filter to see if it helped as a blocked air filter can cause this...
So I just removed it just to have a go...
Now she’s running smooth! No lumpy running, was able to turn the choke off AND usually the head would get upto 120•c within 5 mins of running,
Just had her running for 15 mins, revving her etc etc and she only got to 114•c
So removing the air filter made her run cooler and smoother
It’s a brand new filter so I don’t get it!?
Iv played with the fuel and air mixture with air filter in before but no matter what setting i had it she still ran hot and lumpy
So good and bad! I can’t drive her around with no air filter! Haha
Any suggestions?

I drove my Austin Healy Sprite for 101,000 miles with just a pair of open ram tubes and had no problem. So running the 126 without a filter will not be a problem unless you are going to do some sort of desert rally :)

Sounds like progress! I presume you've checked there isn't a blockage in the air filter box/tube/canister thing?
Stick a cone filter on and enjoy it while the sun's out!
