an old tradition
 when visiting folk giving a piece of coal was supposed to bring luck for the new year to the home visiting, ;D
at least that is how understand it, (am willing to learn more) ;D

any more traditions?

fixit - there's an old tradition in Wales which happens around the new year. Not as nice as yours
