My previously very unloved 126 arrived last night. Aside from the horrendously filthy interior and the rotting filling in the seats - when I switch the ignition on there is a loud continious clicking noise in the engine. it starts first time though without any problems. Any idea what that clicking is? Electrical issue or starter motor issue??

a clicking noise in engine bay first thought
does the car have an electric fuel pump, and is pressurising the fuel ready for starting??
some owners retro fitted an electric pump rather than the engine mechanical run one.
the mechanical one is on top of engine between alternator far left and carburettor far right, the fuel pump is the part with plastic bag on in picture behind distributor in picture
my other thought was a starter solenoid sticking, but then wouldn't start
the only other thing can think is a relay clicking, but its too long ago for me to remember if there is a relay in engine bay..
hope this helps

That's helpful thank you. I think it is an electric fuel pump - the small metal box in the photo is what's clicking very loudly. There is a tube coming up into it with a filter attached so I assume it's the fuel pump.

hi
think your right
just found this,
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inline-Universal-Electric-MarkUK%C2%AE-HRF-013/dp/B01BF5XOBA/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1509975222&sr=8-5&keywords=electric+fuel+pump
something new learnt today all electrical fuel pumps are not round.

Yeah that’s an electric fuel pump. It’s what’s known as a “solid state†pump and has a little bar that flicks left and right really quickly to pump the fuel. I have one on mine and it rattles like hell for about 2 seconds until the carb is full of fuel then it quietens down after that and you can’t hear it when the engine is running. I also tried a cylindrical one but that just whines and I could hear it even with the engine running so opted for the less noisy solid state one.

I've ordered a new one off of amazon to see if it is quieter! :D
