Been a few timing based threads on hear lately but when was the last time you gave your Dizzy the once over? A little attention here can pay dividends. if you take the dizzy body out, rotate the shaft and see of there is any waggle in the shaft, worn bushes in the dizzy body will cause the shaft to rattle around affecting timing, there are usually lubrication points and a little squirt goes a long way, don't forget to lube your shaft (no lewd comments please). next check that the advance/ retard mechanism moves freely with no grittiness and that it returns to the same point smartly, if not dismantle clean and rebuild, also check the advance vacuum hose, a perished hose is no good and will affect it's operation. Next the cam and points, clean the cam and then wipe a smear of grease on it, this lubricates the plastic heal of the points stops it wearing down and causing the points to close, the points themselves ( the contact surfaces) should be mirror like any pitting may suggest a failed condenser or at least a poor connection to the condenser (crud on the terminal), points can be refaced with 2000 grit and autosol on a piece of card, but generally this will be a short term fix and as points are cheap just fit new, check the settings of the points, also reset the sparkplug gaps these migrate over time as the electrode erodes and the other bit moves as it heats and cools repeatedly, again replace if necessary, job done, a baggy distributor can cause other problems which then get overthought, a little maintenance keeps problems at bay, we often overlook these things as we drive other cars that don't have them and most garages have forgotten about them
