my backplates are completely and utterly rotten
so need to replace them, had a hard time finding some but i did evenually get some replacements......
so can anyone explain how to strip it down to swap them?
sadly it looks like my haynes manual only explains the earlier version of the fiat 126

There easy enough if a little time consuming. First you need to remove the drum and strip the shoes off then undo the brake pipe union that goes into the back of the wheel cylinder (remember to clamp the brake hose). After that you need to remove the four 13mm bots that hold the drive flange onto the bearing carrier (the drive flange is on the end of the drive shaft) move the drive shaft to one side and you will see a big nut. This needs to come off either with an air gun or brute force by screwing two wheel bolts through the hub and threading a bar through them while turning the nut on the other side. With this out the way you can pull off the rubber drive coupling and with a little tap of a rubber mallet tap the hub shaft out of the bearing carrier being carful of the little spacer behind it. With all this out of the way you'll see four nuts inside the brake back plate. Undo those and extract the bearing carrier and the back plate will be now loose and free to remove.
After that it's a case of swapping the shoes and wheel cylinder over and refitting in reverse order to how I explained
