Title: Fiat 126 Bis alternator
Post by: Amateb8 on January 14, 2016, 09:08:16 PM
The warning light indicating insufficient battery charge is coming on slightly. Probably needs to be repaired soon. I have not idea how much it costs to get it repaired. I saw this on ebay for £90, which is tempting.

I know it might be a silly question, but have you checked the belt tension? How old is your battery?

I wonder if you can get new carbon brushes for them?

They are back in stock with Mister Auto at £75.89 with promo code AUTO5. This includes the £9 deposit which is refundable, probably not worth because of the shipping return costs to France.

I've had the car for over 9 years now, so the battery is kinda old. I could not find a receipt when the battery was acquired by the previous owner. So, the battery is even older. 9+ years old battery and 6000 miles added, it still starts the first time, so the battery seem okay.

I checked the alternator with a multimeter. With the engine switched off, the battery is emitting 12.6v, which is fine. With the engine running, the battery is showing 14.6v, so the alternator is charging normally. But after about 15 minutes, the warning light starts to flicker very slightly, however, it disappears when the engine is revved. At this stage (with the warning light slightly flickering), I checked the battery voltage. It dropped to just 12.9v. It remained 12.9v when the engine is revved. I am sure, if I switched on the lights etc, it would have fallen below the 12.6v threshold of acceptability. So I think the alternator needs repairing quite soon.

I drove it for about an hour. Strangely, the flickering light disappeared! I think the alternator's charging capability is starting to deteriorate.

I also checked the belt tension and the connection behind the alternator as per Lad's suggestion. They seem fine.

Could be the regulator on its way out

They have the brushes (carbon pins), the regulator, or the whole alternator here.

Hi. I'm suffering from a non charging alternator, battery light permanently on and only 11.99 v on a multi meter when running.
Is the aircooled 650cc alternator the same as all 126 (bis?)

Could there be another issue I overlooking causing the non charging? The battery looks new.
Ta.

Air cooled altenators are different. The Bis mounts like most cars but the air cooled has a post that bolts to the block.
Not sure about the internals.
