Post by: richard on June 05, 2006, 10:26:14 PM
hello there , i have a carb that is caked up with old petrol thats turned into sludge ..

somebody told me once , if i remember right ??

that i can boil the carb in a saucepan in washing up powder ???

can anyone confirm this ??

one more question, i have previously tried to clean the carb with carb cleaner and also blasted jets with my compressor and its still dirty and gunked up .. so will boiling do the trick ??

It was mentioned in an old thread

I have never tried it so cannot comment if it works.

if the carb is unusable at the mo,whats to lose?????? i say go for it without the powder, then,if still full of pooe go with the powder......by the way, have you tried cellulose thinners???? gun cleaner grade does a fab job on old carbs, melts jellyfied/hardened unleaded as well.just done some jets on an old m/bike for my brother, stick it in a tin cover and let it soak for a day or two......£7.00 a gallon here, cheap for the job

personally I would stick with the thinners. If you messs it up a new carb is only about a tenner.

i would definitely go with the thinners, i've done this a number of times on my bis does he job nice.
boiling in a pan may make the pan dirtier than the carb. you will have to put in as much effort cleaning the pan as you would the carb.
