Engine lid stand off to help cooling

(1/2) > >>

gt alex:
After having trouble starting after starting hot after fast drive in 40degC weather.
If I just stop it restarts but give it 10 minutes for the heat to soak in and it won't.
It just smells flooded and no go, let it cool another 10-15 minutes and sweet again.

Since I an planning a 400km drive this week I thought I would see if this does the trick.
I bought two gas filled the softest and shortest I could buy locally.

I mounted them without any drilling on the body work.

Minijohn:
400km drive - you're braver than me - and my car has doors !!
Good luck

Bar Vitelli:
Did you fix the overheating? If so, what did you do? I’ve had a similar problem on one of my cars. I’ve tried all the usual fixes so keen to hear if/how you’ve got it sorted.

gt alex:
Fixing the over heating is a complicated question.
I removed thermostat flap completely since I live in a hot climate, but I have to say It didn't fix the hard starting when hot.
The best things I have done
Cleaned out the fuel tank and pickup (used 2mm stainless multi strand cable with the end frayed to made like a bottle brush) it was very blocked.
rebuilt the starter motor (go figure)
123 ignition dizzy and better coil
Open the lid while driving (This was the first test open 50mm was much better but still had to wait twice to restart hot.)

It was sitting 95-100kph on the hi way and copied with horrible stop start.
Putting hand on the inside of the open engine cover still feels very hot. Next try will be 100mm open

Bar Vitelli:
Remeber as well that whilst fixing other things can get broken so if you need to go back and do things you have already done like points, condensor, spark plugs it’s always worth doing. Fuel pump, fuel rod and particularly carburettor are all worth doing as well as checking the oil is all okay.  Stick with it, you will fix it but when you do you will never be 100% sure which bit fixed it!
