Hi, long time 126 owner here.....
« on: March 20, 2006, 09:01:11 PM »
at the beginning of the 90s i used to run an old 280SE as an everyday car and wanted something a bit smaller as a "lifeboat" for when the Merc was in the drydock. Someone i knew had a Fiat 126 De Ville for sale for around a ton with a short MOT; i did not actually know what a 126 was at the time but later discovered someone over the road from me had a Black limited edition 126 in their back yard, which the wife thought was really cute and even said she would learn to drive if i got one aswell, so I went for it.

the car was about 40 miles from where i lived so i got a bus over there and drove it back, ufortunatly the clutch died on the way home (because of this i got the car for 50 notes). I called the AA out and got the car home, changing the clutch was a very easy job, and with a little welding the car was easily put through its MOT (again an easy job as i had my own MIG that i used to rebuild the Merc), and once i had put the davits on the back of the 280 i had my perfect lifeboat (not realy but the Fiat was so tiny it could have been mounted on davits).

the merc ended up in dry dock for a few years (the rustproofing on the merc was even worse that that of the Fiat) so the Fiat was my main transport, including a daily comute of 25 miles on high speed reads with up to 4 passengers (yes at times this little car had five adults jammed in), after a while getting there it managed to cruise happily at 70 provided there where no hills. and it was a brilliant vehicle in the snow (provided you where well dressed for the winter) with its rear egnine rear wheel drive and narrow tyres.

In fact the little blue car was so good i put the merc on classic car insurance and used the 126 as an everyday car. after about 2 years i lost 1st and reverse, so got the box off the car over the road, stripped the 2 boxes down and made a good one out of the best bits from the 2, and all was well for a while longer, later the timming chain broke and although I put a new one in the engine never ran as sweet. later i got hold of the black limited edition, and used it as a doner car (the car was rotton although it did have a new floor in it), using the engine (which was an absolute peach) this "new" engine often took the car off the clock on the way home from work. The doner car had lights with reversing lights built in to the rear light clusters and a switch on this gear changing mechanism which i put on the blue car (i did not use the seats with head rests as they where pretty roppy and the black interior in my blue car was perfect), i also got hold of a full length wabasto sunroof which i also put on the Fiat, eventually i sold the little blue car when i got hold of an X1/9 and sold the black car fitted with the old engine to a farmer for his young son to use as a field car. The x1/9 was a dog and i regreted getting rid of the 126.

Acouple of years later i was passing a showroom with my wife and there was a little white BIS for sale, "if we get that, I'll definatly learn to drive" says the wife (she did not bother to learn in the blue car as i effectivly took it over). I got it and drove it to my garrage and left it there, my wife never got the nerve to drive, and now has deceded not to. After a while the car would not start although it still turned over. After some detective work i traced the problem to a inoperative fuel pump, a trip to the loacal Fiat dealer got me a new one and the car started no problem, I now had the car for 9 years and only done a few hundred miles in it. the MOT has run out but i'll get a new one this summer and get it out of the garage where it has been all the time it has been with me. The car is vitually rust free, has had a new gearbox fitted while in my care, comes with a fully stamped FIAT service manual along with loads of history and has done 40,000 miles.

I have a full length wabasto sun foof to fit to this one aswell, and am looking to fit alloys, but need some advice here. What alloys will fit straight on without needing any body mods and do they need longer studs and/or special wheel nuts. I am looking at some X1/9 alloys and some off a 850 Coupe, will either of these wheels fit and can i use the standard tyres on them?

you mentioned the 126 black special   just dont see them about, i dont know if there are any left now???

is your white BIS kept in a garage? out of all of them which would you say has been the best? are you happy with the BIS? do you find it reliable?

Kind regards and welcome to the club!

the BIZ is garaged, even my new Golf does not have that luxury. The bottom of the drivers door is rusty but i have a new one to replace it with, the spare wheel sell is pristine and other than a a couple of very small paint bubble by the air intakes below the windscreen and one on the tailgate, the car looks almost new.

I only have used the BIZ for 6 weeks as my sole car so can't coment on its reliability, suffice to say it ran for that time without any problems although the oil pressure lite came on a few times that led me to have concerns, so i got a new Polo and put the fiat into my garage (that was 4 and a half years ago), since than the fiat has been out to be MOTed and put back, the battery is disconected and it still starts up no problem, although it takes quite a while for the petrol to get the carb and prime it.

The blue car was reliable over the years i owned it, it only failed to run on 2 occasions (although it was akward for a time running without 1st and reverse); once when the timeing chain broke needed to be towed home, and the second time on the way to work it stopped; i called the breakdonw people and when they got there it was light and the problem was obvious; the HT lead had come off the coil, so within minutes it was running again. At one time there was a short under the car which resulted in the bowden cable operating the starter to melt almost causing a fire, which meant i had no starter for a few weeks while i got a new cable, but this never actually caused much of a probem as the car was easily bump started within a few feet by opening the door and paddling the car if there was no hill.

Which was the best, the BIZ is far more practical with its rear boot, but there is a lot more to go wrong with the water cooled engine. The aircooled car served me well for a long time, but in the end it was the rust that forced me to sell it, the BIZ being galvanised makes it a better prospect.

dont think the BIS is galzanised, a good place for wheels is www.tyresave.co.uk and look up KN Minatours, they are a mini lite style wheel. I have some 12" ones on my 126, they do 13"s too and just ask them for a Fiat 98mm fitment. Bolts come with them.

cheers for the pointer on the wheels, i was told by a fiat specialist mine was galvanised and the lack of rust led me to believe this, but it may have just led a sheltered life. Do you know if X1/9 wheels will fit, or 850 coupe wheels? i am not sure if i want to spend loads on wheels for what is a summer fun car, but i do want to reduce the unsprung wieght to improve the ride.

EDIT

I think i have the info i need about the wheels looking through the forums here.

speaking from experiance, reducing the unsprung weight makes no difference to the ride on a 126 Im afraid! however, a new leaf spring on the front makes a world of difference.

cheers paul, i look out for some wheels of this type cheap and get some new 155/65 13s to fit. I live near the royal naval dockyard in plymouth and spent some time at a navel collage in the early 70s and i have spent a short time aflaot as an engineer on a trawler, but the old merc always used to put me in mind of a battleship or similar :) put it this way the ford sierra that pulled out in front of it once was pretty messed up considering the deep scratch the merc suffered

they where second hand, the first was off an old suberu coupe, that was fitted to the de ville; to fit it i removed the original sun roof and then just cut the roof away from around this. the one i have for the BIS is from a mini estate that was being screpped, i bought the whole roof of the mini and will use the this as a pattern to cut the oof out of the BIS. the sunroofs when fitted to the fiat cover the whole roof and can be opend/closed while the car is being driven, and when clossed are virtually airtight.

i am not sure if you can even get them anymore, I can't find any info on the web other than a couple of cars on ebay fitted with them.  there are a few on ebay but i am not sure if they are the right size. you;ll need to measure the fiat to see what size you need. There is an electric one from a Mini complete with all fittings, that would be pretty cool, although you would need to wire it up and add a switch it shouldn't be that hard.
