I tried to start little enzo up today and the starter motor was turning fine one second, then I tried to start him again a few seconds later, but when i turned the key in the ignition, nothing happened. Could this be a loose connection? I'm pretty sure the battery is in good nick...
-
you really need to test your battery first. it could be the feed wire from ignition to the starter solenoid or its connection terminal on the starter itself.. test the battery before anything else.
-
Hi enzo mine is doing the same thing but i have done some tests and mine is the starter solleniod. if you try and start it the solleniod dosn't click check that the red/black stripe wire ( one of the thin ones) hasn't come off the back of the starter solleniod, if it is still connected if you pull/screw off the wire, connect a 12v tester (bulb type) or a meter to the red/black wire and earth the other end, when you turn the ignition switch to start the bulb should light up or there should be 12v on a meter, if it lights up the ignition switch and wiring is ok, then the solleniod is faulty if it dosn't light up check the wiring and ignition switch

did a test on the battery and the reading was 12.7 volts, on the 200 DCV setting which i dont really understand. is this normal and where should i look next?
thanks
(also, the fuel filter has liquid in it, should it be like that?)

i think its the sollenoid, where is this and how do i get to it?
-
Hi Rich its at the back of the engine, it bolts thru the bellhousing it has 2 very thick wires and 2 thin wires conected, check the 2 thin wires are connected these energize the solleniod, if these are connected see my previous listing to check the the wire from the ignition to the solleniod, jack car up and use axle stands to be safe. it there anyone around Guildford, Surrey that might be able to come and help me with this one?
theres a bit of cash and a pint in it

my golf had NEVER let me down, then over christmas for about a week i was stranded, exactly the same trouble as you are having, i tested the battery and everything read fine. as everything looked ok and the starter motor was ok etc i didnt know what to do. i even took the car to quicksh!t and they did a tes ton battery / alternator and said it was fine.
after getting stranded 3 times in one day and having to get lifts from people i decided to change the battery before i took it into a garage...
i changed the battery and now i have NO problems at all, i thought it was a wiring problem, it just turned out the battery was no longer holding any charge.
try changing the battery... it could just be that its reached the end of its life...
as for fuel filter having water in it... if the fuel filter on a 126 is like most it could just be condensation???

I have had similar problems in the past! I took my car to the tyre/battery centre who used an ordinary multi-meter to test the battery!
This is a waste of time, it does not show the true state of the battery!
Took it to another garage, they tested it with a dropload tester, it showed straight away that the battery was duff!
The only way to test a battery properly is with a dropload tester!
9/10 it's the battery when the cold weather comes, this is when they start to play up!

I am going to have a look at enzo tomorrow and try and fix him up. Where abouts is the starter motor in this image? Also is the part by my finger the fuel filter? Its just that I wasn't sure whether there should be liquid in there.
Thanks![/img]

About the battery - A few days before it went I drove 200 miles back from Norwich...would this not have recharged the battery enough to keep it going, even in the cold?
Cheers.

Hi Rich, the starter is located at the top right hand side of your picture, below the exhaust pipe.Make sure the battery is disconnected before you take the starter out or you'll make lot's of cool firework's and spark's :D .The fuel filter will never be full of fuel you should see some passing through but not jam packed.Hope this help's
-
hi thanks il have a look today see what i can get fixed.
the thing thats being pointed out in the photo, should i disconnect it and take out the liquid that seems to be in there (theres a large amount of it too)
-
The thing being pointed at is indeed the inline fuel filter, it should have fuel in it. You will not need to disconnect this if you are working on the starter-motor. The starter is on the right of your picture but behind, you may find it easier to look at it from under the car.

Just read back my last post, just to clarify, there is nothing wrong if the fuel filter reatains some fuel, Its worth changing it every couple of years, but won't be the cause of your starter problem.
The starter motor is located at the back of the engine. If you crawl under the car facing upwards with your head under the sump and exhaust side you will see the starter motor, it is located where the garbox meets the engine block about 2/3 up, big electric motor shaped thing with a solinoid attached to it – the only thing you will see from there with big wires attached to it. Disconnect the battery, undo three nuts/bolts and its off.
Hope it helps

im pretty sure the batterys dead as it started working with a whimper and now is dead again, where can i get a new one and hwo much?
thanks
-
you can of course get one from halfords, (about £45) i think i aid a couple of years ago.
like Chris Lewis said a while back, you can always tell a dodgy batt, when the cold weather is here.
regards
Chris

try starting on a known good battery or from jump leads before getting a new one. Also check the cells are topped up with deionised water. Its quite common to have to give a battery a long slow charge during the winter as older cars and the weather take a lot out of them.
-
ive had a mechanic over and now know that the starter motor is not working and i need it replaced. could any of you do the job, my location is guildford surrey and im willing topay and supply parts!
Thanks
Rich
