help starting up
« on: March 25, 2013, 11:03:12 PM »
Hi all just want to know where I am going wrong , My 126 AC starts on the button all I do is pull the choke up full , pull the starter and off she goes. The problem is if I touch the gas it cuts out straight away, When i get into the car at first i do not touch anything. It is like it is trying to warm up and refuses to move until a few minutes has passed.

Sorry to hear that Jon maybe remove the plugs and put a drop of petrol in just to get it to fire, warm the plugs might help

I would check the carb for leaks. Make sure the seals and the plastic spacer under the carb  are all in good condition and properly tightened.

I need lessons as I'm new to this, hopefully have a mechanic coming round this weekend to give me some pointers.

Thought id post here rather than new topic! Just been to get the paint code off mine, thought id see if she starts. Ignition came on, as did interior lights, but engine wont even turn over, not even a click?! Any ideas? Last time I used her, I cleaned the engine. Is there anything that might have got water in it to stop it turning over? Or is the batt just flat?

nice one I thought you got it for the wife  ;D. I was out in mine today runs fine every time i stop I think it is going to cut out but it never does , but a bit nerve racking when you pull up at a major junction and you cannot hear if the engine is still running  :o

If the interior lights go dim when you turn the key then you have a flat battery. If the lights don't change it will be a dodgy electrical connection or relay.

I noticed I got what sounded like my first back fire when dropping the gears in a hurry and stopping

Been out for a spin and 3 times it cut out when i stopped. The choke appears to be the only thing that keeps it ticking over at a comfortable level , like its not going to cut out. Very nerve racking as it stopped at 2 junctions and I had to push it  :o

You can turn up the idle by a screw on the carb. Adjust it when the engine is fully warmed up.

Got mine started too. Think it was a flat battery, even though id tried using jump leads twice, I think the battery on my Abarth was low too.

Yesterday was the first maiden voyage with only 3 breakdowns ,The car may start first time from cold with the choke up full but cuts out if you touch the gas at all , I noticed a back fire once also, I will try giving the grub screw a quarter turn in or out I dont know  :o
