I've recently bought my 1990 BIS as a project car to work on,
While it runs, the engine stalls as soon as i put a gear in, now
with the excessive fuel smell, i suspect the carburettor may be running
way to rich.
Am i on the right track or is there be anything else i should look out for?

What happens if you rev it without putting it in gear?
-
It revs normally, and keeps running.
-
Id check the simple stuff first - if there’s a fuel filter - is it blocked.
-
No fuel filter unfortunately. Replaced the air filter, carb now seems completely out of whack.

check the carb for air leaks, make sure all the air pipes are in good condition and in the right place

They do seem to be in the right place. However, I'm not sure if the distributors diaphragm is supposed to be movable.

It should be screwed to the distributor - 2 screws either side

It seems like one of the screws went missing, the other one wiggled it's way out and I found it underneath the car.

So I removed the dizzy to get the diaphragms fixed, and in the process seem to have messed up the timing to the point where the engine is just turning over. The manual gives some indication on how to adjust the timing, but it looks like I have to take the valance off to do it. Is there a way to set it right without removing the valance?

You don't need to remove the rear valance, loosen the distributor nut and take the top cap off, align the front pulley to the 10 deg point (green) connect a 12v test lamp bulb between (red and earth) with the ignition on move anti-clockwise till the goes on and off and clamp
