Title: MCA Spider
Post by: amam on April 04, 2016, 09:44:09 AM
You could call it a restoration, its never been on the road so its more like a car build as it was never finished, lots of little things still need doing even though the majority of the car has already been built

I found out that the original buyer bought this to build after his wifes 1979 fiat 126 deville got very rusty, it cost him over £1700 for the kit in 1992 and he did choose some optional extras like the camber kit and lower springs, according to the chassis this is number 26

As you can probably see there is no interior fitted, as in no carpets or seats but it has no washers, no horn, no front indicators, no foot brakes and a non runner

After a day of looking over it and tinkering i replaced the points/condenser as the points looked burnt out...after that i noticed there was no fuel getting to the pump, i removed the tank sender unit and cleaned it out, i then fitted a fuel filter in the fuel pipe aswell

after this the engine fired into life and run rather nicely, the only thing i didnt like was the exhaust fitted, its basically a 2 in 1 chrome pipes with no silencer and it sounds like a machine run

so im just gathering parts now, i can't decide on a front set of indicators yet as i cant find any that are nice and slim, not forgetting some door mirrors too

i need some door furniture too as there is no latches or locks, im thinking of just having push button door lock instead of using handles as it'll look much nicer

Nice to see this one made it`s way on the forum :thumbup.
I`ve got one of these too, but it`s all in bits at the moment. My one is number 27 ;D
I like the look of the fiat 127 front side light/indicator units. They are fairly slim and would suit the angular shapes of the MCA.
Looking forward to some more updates on this one.

Just double checked, mine is 24......

shame thought you'd of had the next one along to mine, is yours a coupe or a convertible?

My one is also a convertible. I believe there were only 26 MCAs made in total, so kind of hoping my one could be the last one made.
The engine is looking much tidier now :thumbup

If there were only 26 made then how is yours 27?  :P

Small kit car companies don`t usually use number 13. I believe this was also the case with the CC Zeros.
I could be completely wrong of course ;D

Few more things happening on the kit car

its gained some indicators and side lights aswell as some MCA decals as i got some recreated

on the back the roll over bar is now black and ive fitted vents to help that air cooled engine, just help vent the hot air from the engine bay

ive sorted most of the wiring now, it has a horn now, washers and got the indicators working. Also some wing mirrors

doors are coming along as ive fitted Reliant door latches and striker plates, ive had to modify them slightly as the latches are now mounted inside the door and extended the striker plates

quick update

so i went to our Reliant owners club national rally and won these seats off ebay over the same weekend, they were local to the camp site

and cost only £10!

they are red leather daihatsu copen seats, just dropped one of them in to see what they looked like.....they are the perfect size  :D

ah well hes a update

decided i'd convert the kit car to the SU 1 1/4 carb as i know it very well, i bought the manifold to allow it to fit

to fit the manifold you have to undo two of the head nuts and screw the studs on, then the manifold slides down them and you use one bolt at the back too.........well thats whats suppost to happen

it was a huge pain to fit the manifold, i ended up hoaning out the holes because they didnt quite line up with the studs and then i had to do the same with the rear hole.......then i had to grind down the back edge as it hit the rocker cover not allowing the manifold to sit flat.....

manifold fitted

got a carb, a early SU without the breather as it won't be needed, just test fitting it, removed the original throttle linkage, just waiting for parts to rebuild the carb

next pain in the ar*e was the thermostat, ive never seen the flap open since ive got it, removed the tin ware

then found out my thermostat was a all in one version which i guess it what was originally fitted! also trying to get the rod off it broke......so ive now bought a thermostat plate, new rod and nut for it....just got to wait for them to arrive now

so heres the update and none of the jobs i started ive managed to finish yet........great........lol

Can I be the first to congratulate you on what looks to be the most rapid and stonkingly superb resto I can recall seeing. I take my hat off to you (well, I would if I wore one), I don't know how you got such rapid progress and still kept doing the day job - unless restoring this little gem *is* your day job!

Well done, and lots of photos please for the 2017 126 calendar!

thank you for your kind words, there is plenty to do yet such as get a convertible roof made, tidy up the wiring room and fix a few rough edges, the car has been done in late afternoons and the odd free days during this summer, surprised myself how fast ive done most of it but ive not skipped on the quality of parts ive bought

ive just re-added alot of photos since alot had gone missing from this thread

Great stuff amam.  Nice to see another MCA being rebuilt.   I'm also fitting a similar inlet manifold so hoping mine will be easier!

love to see some more pictures of your coupe, only saw the ones on ebay, i did love it when it was originally in that bluey turquoise colour

Well done, capital effort ! Now, before you drive it on today's somewhat filthy dirty roads, some photos please for the 2018 Club126 Calendar !

How long has that taken you from when you first acquired it (which from my recollection was about two weeks ago !!) ?

well the MCA is all registered, mot'd, tax'd and insured (reasonably too)

been driving it locally today just to get a feel of it and do some shaking down to find fault heres my list so far

1. brakes sticking slightly: fixed now after another bleeding

2. the new thermostat refuses to open, was driving it around for about half a hour and the flap never moved, so the engine was getting a bit too warm

even though the sun came out i wish it was a bit warmer!

Hi amam
Would it be possible to take some photos of your MCA badge for me please?
I'm going to try and get some made up for mine so will hopefully be able to do a spare one for you too.
My email is [email protected] if you can
Cheers
Rob

took forever the make them

which in your case means about 20 minutes, I imagine, judging by what you've already achieved with this wondeful looking little gem !
